So I was looking through this Lanvin ad campaign shot by Inez.

[This is the ad in question.]

So many people were speculating that this was supposed to mark the Zombie 2010 trend, although which trend this is, I don’t know, because Spring 2010 was all about Miu Miu cats. (Maybe The Walking Dead series?) Anyways, I get that she’s supposed to be skinless and all, but the photo, and Inez in red reminded me of this little moment in Beautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen.

“One night in our seventh year of marriage Edith coated herself with deep red greasy stuff she had bought in some theatrical supply store. She applied it from a tube. Twenty to eleven, back from the library, and there she was, stark naked in the middle of the room, sexual surprise for her old man. She handed me the tube, saying: Let’s be other people.”

The speaker is remembering a small intimate moment with his wife — where she was trying to experiment and liven up their relationship. He hesitated and rejected the red paint, and he is now revisiting the scene with regret. (She committed suicide not too long after this exchange, and he wonders whether she wanted to discover herself, unearth some hidden part of herself.)
