The Man From Nowhere (Korean title: 아저씨/Mister):

Originally I didn’t want to watch this movie because it was the classic “drug war” “Emotionally unstable secret agent in hiding” plot line that always bothers me because it’s in every action movie ever. However, this one is actually OK. I was pleasantly surprised by the qualities of the film. The whole “ant farm” concept ,with the children, was interesting to see at work.
I liked that throughout the film the main character was neutral, “I’m her next door neighbor”, and promising to kill both men even if he found her- dead or alive after the mother’s death. I didn’t say this would be spoiler free did I? I felt that this way he was moreso releasing all the pent up anger that had festered over the loss of his wife and child, the constant battle, anguish of killing people, etc, rather than seeking revenge for the neighbor’s daughter that shadowed him like an orphan.
Sure, it wasn’t perfect and I’m not crazy about watching people get completely slaughtered, but for a Korean movie, it was nice seeing gore…
I’m wondering if the main actor, Won Bin, is mixed ethnicity? His eyes are a very light brown that I’ve never seen in before. Could be contacts, but I’m looking it up now and it seems as if they’re real.
I didn’t like that after the “final battle” he was just planning on killing himself. The fight seemed far from over. He destroyed 3 nests (with the help of the police) but was that it? You would think that with that big of an organization….
So then maybe it was all just about the little girl. Or maybe it was just that he replaced his dead unborn child with her and was delusioned. Who knows. Afterwards I’m assuming he was put on trial. Which is at least a realistic ending. Would’ve liked to know exactly what happened but oh well.
I heard people say that they watched it over and over, or that it made there heart break but I’ve seen this too much in American films to really be shocked by the content.
I’ll still give it a of 7.5/10 for being an action movie that I didn’t totally dislike.
