How To: Terrariums

Terrariums—what’s not to love? they’re (typically) pint-sized, easy to care for, and are great at bring an en plein air vibe to your home. This past Earth Day weekend, our friends from Terrain led a crash course on terrarium making at our Flatiron store in NYC—and we’re sharing the scoop with you here.

Deb was our terrarium teacher. You can find her in Westport, CT doing all sorts of gardening goodness.

Step 1: Find a glass vessel. There are great ones to be had at thrift shops, hardware stores, and of course, yours truly. (Our pick: the Medina Terrarium.)

image

Step 2: Line the vessel with 1.5 inches of gravel. Gravel is essential for drainage, but go ahead and have fun selecting the color.

Step 3: Add a layer of activated charcoal. Charcoal will keep the water clean and your terrarium smelling fresh.

Step 4: Add a layer of organic potting soil. (Why organic? It means no white fertilizer balls.)

Step 5: Aka, the fun part—choosing your plants! Be sure to choose species that grow well together. For example, don’t mix a ferm with a cactus (natch). Arrange the plants in the terrarium, surrounding their roots with the potting soil. Go for varying heights to add dimension and interest, and—this is key—do not overstuff.

Step 6: Select a decorative topper such as moss, and then fold in additional decorative elements to your liking—perhaps sea glass, or pebbles, or shells. The idea is to look at your terrarium and be surprised with each glance.

Step 7: Water your terrarium right away—two or three ounces should do the trick. If your vessel has a lid, only water it once a week as it will trap moisture inside. Sans lid? Water it every 4-5 days. Set it near a window so it gets some sunlight, and enjoy!
