Impromptu Project: Painting with dyes

I was cooking other day while my daughter flitted around the kitchen going through drawers. She finally found something intriguing, food coloring, and she proceeded to beg me to color with it. If anyone has ever tried to argue with a two and a half year old you know it is mostly a futile effort. If you don’t find a way to make the conversation agreeable it will usually end in a “Nooooooooooo! Ahhhhhhhhh! Pleeeeeeeeeez!” and somebody stomping the floor (sometimes that would be me….)

So I figured let’s give it a try. Knowing that you can make Easter egg dye out of food coloring, vinegar, and water I loosely combined those three ingredients in a  few tupperware containers:

  • Equal parts distilled white vinegar & room temperature water
  • 10 drops of food coloring

We added some q-tips and away she went! It seems like kids never ever get tired of painting with new things.

I liked the results, too!

Disclaimer:

This is best as a  supervised activity. For the most part the dye came out off the table but it is dye and can stick around for awhile. Same goes for little hands!
