Help Wanted: Yahoo! Hiring Social Editors

Big news, digital media people: Yahoo! is hiring social editors across its News, Sports, Entertainment and Commerce properties. Check out the job descriptions:

Y! News
Y! Sports
Y! Entertainment (Movies, TV, Music and omg!)
Y! Commerce (Travel, Shopping, Autos, and Real Estate)

This is Yahoo!’s latest step in extending conversations and user engagement both on- and off-network. Between the success of Social Bar, the rapid growth of Yahoo! social experiences (14M+ Facebook fans in less than a year) and making social an integral part Yahoo!’s editorial culture, this is a top priority and growth area for the company.

These social editors will coordinate and execute social efforts for Yahoo!’s leading media properties, track and measure success and lead the way in innovation and storytelling. The social editors will also coordinate SEO efforts and be the off-network publishing lead for the property. If you’ve got what it takes to lead the conversation, engage Yahoo!’s 180M monthly users and attract new ones from around the social web, email Yahoo! social lead Violet Lim (VLim@yahoo-inc.com).

Hiring vent

I do NOT want to read your resume, I will look for ANY reason to stop reading it, don’t give me a reason.

STOP stringing together several large words that don’t say anything.  It does not make you look intelligent.

Make it easy to read, formatting is important.  I am not going to read something that gives me a headache or could possibly give me a seizure.

PROOF YOUR FUCKING WORK.  If you can’t catch a typo on your own resume, the first representation of yourself, I’ll be damned if I will let you represent my company or waste my time looking past the first typo.

Capitalize properly.  yes i am serious.

Stop using the same cover letter for every single job you apply for unless the ads are practically identical.  It just makes me think that you didn’t bother to read what I wrote in the ad.  I’m glad you want to use your skills to manage a retail store, we are not a retail store.

Oh and I know you didn’t read the ad, that’s why I put in the little test that you failed.  100+ (yes that many) resumes I won’t be reading.

Do not call yourself an expert or tell me about your expertise in anything.  You’re not. Oh you’re an expert in using office equipment?  Congratulations.

I understand that you are applying for a several jobs, and it’s OK if you don’t have a cover letter, if your resume is strong enough I will contact you.  But if I ask for a reply don’t completely ignore what I ask for, just don’t.  (About 15 people have done this)

Don’t take more than a day to reply, you have a lot of competition, there are only so many interviews that can be scheduled.

Unless you treat looking for a job like a job, chances are you won’t find a good one.

Employers aren't trying very hard to hire

Tired of your loved ones giving you a hard time for not “trying hard enough” to get a job? Well, looks like you have FACTS on your side to shut them up!

Mike Konczal at Next New Deal points out that the amount of effort employers have put into finding new hires sharply fell during the recession and has yet to bounce back. A chart in the post shows

ThinkProgress explains

“Recruiting intensity” is a measure of employer behavior that encompasses advertising expenditures, screening methods, hiring standards, and the attractiveness of compensation packages. Those in turn affect the number and quality of people applying to job openings, the speed with which their applications are processed, and their acceptance rate when job offers are actually made

Somehow I have a feeling that giving the corporations tax breaks hasn’t made them feel more inclined to increase recruiter intensity…

The Most Innovative Employees at Google Aren't Stanford/MIT grads with Perfect SATs

Google has long had a reputation for being a place that’s near impossible to get a job if you aren’t a Stanford or MIT grad. They not only asked you for your college GPA, they even asked you what you made on your SAT as a pimple-faced high schooler.

Recently, that’s all changed.

Google’s known for being one of the most data-driven companies in the world and in the area of HR, they’re no different. They even have a department of “people analytics” whose job it is “to apply the same rigor to the people side as to the engineering side.” Google takes this extremely seriously: “All people decisions at Google are based on data and analytics,” according to Kathryn Dekas, a manager in Google’s “people analytics” team.

Their use of data is so powerful that it was able to refute the bias of the company’s founders towards those with an elite educational background that mirrored theirs — that is, top university grads with high GPAs — and it actually resulted in changed organizational behavior.

For years, candidates were screened according to SAT scores and college grade-point averages, metrics favored by its founders. But numbers and grades alone did not prove to spell success at Google and are no longer used as important hiring criteria, says Prasad Setty, vice president for people analytics.

Rather, based on extensive surveys of its work force and performance data, Google discovered that its most innovative workers “are those who have a strong sense of mission about their work and who also feel that they have much personal autonomy.”

Google’s findings have a strong congruence with bestselling author Dan Pink’s work, that the source of human motivation and our best work comes from the drive towards autonomy, mastery and purpose. This can clash with high-prestige and credentialed individuals who are driven by external recognition and rewards, not curiosity and craft.

What you might end up with is people who can follow the rules, but not necessarily those who are after moonshot innovation with extreme dispatch and verve.

More of the Same in 2012

2011 was a great year for Unreal Business Solutions and 2012 will be more of the same. What we do will not change nor will we attempt to go outside of our core services. We will offer more of the same because it works!

What will change in 2012 is our reach. We know people and businesses need what we offer (and we know were they are) but placing what we sell in front of everyone would crush us. It would be impossible to deliver service and we would go bye-bye fairly quick. We market our service based on our ability to handle the work load and continue to deliver quality service. We’re not talking about technological resources we’re talking about people. We will be increasing the number of staff this next quarter so we can increase our reach, grow our business while still providing a high level of service.

We wish everyone a “profitable” New Year!
