“They’ve got their little categories, like ‘conscious’ and ‘gangsta’. It used to be a thing where hip-hop was all together. Fresh Prince would be on tour with N.W.A. It wasn’t like, ‘You have got to like me in order for me to like you.’ That’s just some more white folks trying to think that all niggas are alike, and now it’s expanded. It used to be one type of nigga; now it’s two. There is so much more dimension to who we are. A monolith is a monolith, even if there’s two monoliths to choose from. I ain’t mad at Snoop. I’m not mad at Master P. I ain’t mad at the Hot Boys. I’m mad when that’s all I see. I would be mad if I looked up and all I saw on TV was me or Common or The Roots, because I know that ain’t the whole deal. The real joy is when you can kick it with everyone. That’s what hip-hop is all about. … They keep trying to slip the ‘conscious rapper’ thing on me. I come from Roosevelt Projects, man. The ghetto. I drank the same sugar water, ate hard candy. And they try to get me because I’m supposed to be more articulate, I’m supposed to be not like the other Negroes, to get me to say something against my brothers. I’m not going out like that, man.” ”— Mos Def on being called a “conscious rapper”
IF YOU “LIKE” HIP HOP MUSIC BUT DON’T RECOGNIZE ATMOSPHERE (SLUG) AS ONE OF THE GREATEST STORY TELLING RAPPERS (FRANKLY RAPPER IN GENERAL) OF ALL TIME THAN YOU NEED TO SIT DOWN, SHUT UP AND CHOOSE A DIFFERENT GENRE OF MUSIC TO BE PART OF THE DESTRUCTION OF.
THIS HAS BEEN A HIP HOPPERS WORLDWIDE PSA I’M MAD AS FUCK.
“RHYMESAYERS AND WE OUT…peace.”
it took me a long time to ‘get’ lil B but if you think he’s ‘not utilizing his intelligence’ with his music or at least doing some really interesting and creative things, you shouldnt be writing a music blog. even if his work has like 0 commercial potential LIL B IS FUCKING AWESOME AND THE SWEETEST DUDE.
go away you crusty white boy making money by telling black people their music sucks and that you know SOoOOo MUCH better than them how hip hop should be done
one last post about this then I'm done
So I know you go through your tag and I’m hoping you bother to read this, but Jake. Let me splain to ya why I in particular am displeased with your actions. Ignoring your initial criticisms for now, the fact that whenever a woman of color disagrees with your wording/phrasing/manner of criticism, you decide the proper response is for you (as a white man) to try to goad your followers (a large portion of whom are also white men) into harassing said woman and bullying her into silence.
This is literally the most cliche racist thing you could do in this situation. Like this is the type of action they made faux-inspirational movies about. Do you really think this shit makes you look good? Do you think fostering harassment (the kind of thing people complain about SJ bloggers doing ALL THE TIME) makes you look like the good guy just because you frame it as “they’re ignorant nicki minaj fans”? Seriously, I’d love to know.
