“How can you hide from what never goes away?”

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” ”

c.f. this re-tweet by sharanam of a quote from Ajahn Sumedho:

“Deathlessness is our true nature. My personality gets born and dies all the time.”

“Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play.”

In 1st grade this kinda fat kid named Nick reached the conclusion that every time you do something, it is always the first time you are doing that thing

He had braces & he said that even if you do something a second time, then it would be the First time you were doing it a Second time, & if you do that thing again, then it would be the First time you were doing it a Third time, & so on ad infinitum—get it?

He did not say “ad inifnitum”; he had freckles, was fat, bullied, but I think with wordplay he essentially proved to me that everything is new, all is flux, nothing is stationary, nothing endures but change

You couldn’t step twice into the Same River; for other waters are ever flowing on past you

You couldn’t refresh your browser & load the Same Page twice

“73. How can you hide from what never goes away?”

—Herakleitos (as translated by Guy Davenport)

“Even sleepers are workers and collaborators in what goes on in the Universe. ”

—Heraclitus

“To listen closely--Nietzsche defined philology as "reading slowly"--is to experience, always imperfectly, the possibility that the order of words, notably in metrics and the metrical nerve-structure within good prose, reflects, perhaps sustains the hidden yet manifest coherence of the cosmos.”

—Here George Steiner discusses Heraclitus and the oracular, saying too, “where poetry is most itself, where it comes nearest the fusion of content and form in music, its inclination toward the hermetic will be strongest.” From his The Poetry of Thought, out in late November with New Directions.

“Being inclines intrinsically to self-concealment.”

—Heraclitus, Fragment 123

“˜A hidden connection is stronger than an obvious one.’ ”

—Heraclitus (Via)

“Non si può discendere due volte il medesimo fiume perchè quando ti immergi nel fiume per la seconda volta sia io sia il fiume siamo diversi." "You cannot step twice into the same river because when you step in the river for the second time that's not the same river and you're not the same man." ”
