Heavy In Your Arms [AU] || Damon & Elena

Elena Gilbert didn’t have the best life, but she still had managed to be somewhat happy. When she was sixteen years old, her parents died in a car crash on their way to pick her up from a party. She hadn’t been in the car, but she felt nothing but guilt for years on end. Her brother Jeremy became addicted to drugs shortly after, causing Elena to worry massively about him. A year after her parents death, she found out she was adopted. Of course it was upsetting news, but to her they would always be her mom and dad, even if they weren’t biological. She found out from her Aunt Jenna that it was her Uncle John, an arrogant man whom she despised, that was her real father. She told Jeremy, who still loved her as if she really was her sister. Jeremy had managed to sway from the drugs, but Elena cautiously studied at a local college before going off to pursue her dream. Now, after college, she was back in Mystic Falls. Her brother had moved out of their childhood home and rented an apartment above the grill. He seemed to be off the drugs and doing well for himself, creating comics for the local newspaper.

Having the day off, Elena stayed in the majority of the day to relax after pulling a long shift at the hospital the previous day. She was meeting up with her best friend Caroline at the bonfire later that night, but made it clear she couldn’t stay long since she had work the next morning. Later that night at the bonfire, Elena ran into her ex boyfriend Matt. He continued to look at her longingly, as he had before she left years before. She was really her first boyfriend, she knew he loved her, but she didn’t feel the same way. She was young and at a stage where she didn’t know what she wanted. To this day, she still didn’t.

Needing some air, she walked away, needing some space from all the people at the party. She was walking along the falls. She could see the highway from where she was walking. It was just a road that led back into town and was rarely ever busy. Who would want to come to Mystic Falls. She watched a young golden retriever run through the woods, gasping as he ran out into the road where she noticed a car speeding down it. “Hey!!” She started running, desperate to get the dog to run off. The car got closer and closer and the young puppy was right in it’s path. “Oh my god” she shrieked, unable to witness what was about to happen. She didn’t hear an impact but instead a swerve. Elena looked and saw that the car had swerved around it and continued driving. The poor dog was scared to death and at a stand still in the middle of the highway. Elena ran out and threw her arms around it. “Oh you poor thing.” She said, not noticing that a second car had been close behind and pulled over to the side of the road. She heard the sound of a car door and looked up to see a blue Camaro. A man in black jeans, a black v-neck and a leather jacket had stepped out from behind the wheel but she couldn’t quite make out his face. The blood was pumping into her ears, but she thought she heard him ask if she was okay.

“I love you never felt like any blessing
Whispering like it’s a secret
Only to condemn the one who hears it
With a heavy heart”
