I’m probably late to the game, but I had an epiphany earlier that the fact Haymitch never refers to Katniss and Peeta by their names is a defense mechanism. As a mentor to kids who kept getting killed in the games, he probably developed nicknames for the tributes as a way to keep them at a distance so it wouldn’t hurt so much when they died.
