Okay, the 'Harry Potter' encyclopedia is a go. What burning questions do you hope it'll answer?
Your Tumblrer is writing a PopWatch post about this very issue, and she’d love to have your input as well. So tell her — er, me — which questions have been plaguing you since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? And which characters do you want to know more about?
J.K. Rowling says she’s currently working on a ‘Harry Potter’ encyclopedia.
Back in the day, Harry Potter fans would comb J.K. Rowling’s website searching for Potter clues.
With her site relaunch yesterday, you would’ve thought fans would’ve noticed this new FAQ entry immediately.
Rowling confirms on this new FAQ page that she’s working on a Harry Potter encyclopedia, and that it will take a while to complete:
For a long time I have been promising an encyclopaedia of Harry’s world, and I have started work on this now – some of it forms the new content in Pottermore. It is likely to be a time-consuming job, but when finished I shall donate all royalties to charity.
This is the first time we’re hearing Jo directly confirm she’s currently working on the encyclopedia. We’ve heard her say before she’d consider it – but not that she’s working on it.
“Yeah. Would it be okay if that's ten years? [No one laughed.] No, listen, I absolutely intend to do it, but I can't pretend that I'm in a hurry right now. It's gonna be a hell of a lot of work. But I have - I've kept everything and I know where things are and yeah, at some point I will get myself together and do it.”—JK Rowling talking about the Harry Potter Encyclopedia
Thoughts on Pottermore...
So, I’m predicting (and I hope) It would be one of two things. It’s either an MMORPG (Which I would jump for freakin joy about,) or something else just as immersive and interactive. I would find it strange if it was just the Encyclopedia. I mean, as much as I want to know how the life of the characters panned out after Deathly Hallows, I think we’d benefit more from something that would give us more interaction with the world itself instead. an Encyclopedia is cool and everything, but we can only learn so much to a certain point about the years after.
MMORPG would be interesting because we’ll feel like we’re adding to the story in a way in that we experience that world. Even a fully interactive sight we would probably benefit a lot from. An encyclopedia seems more like it would be a feature on the site than the actual site.
plus, Leaky Cauldron described the site preview as “breathtaking.” That doesn’t sound like a site for an encyclopedia. That sounds more like the description of something fully immersive. Not going to get my hopes up and say that I’m convinced it’s an MMO, But I believe it has to be something a little more creative than a simple encyclopedia.
The Harry Potter Encyclopedia
I’ve been thinking lately about what it means that Jo Rowling is writing the encyclopedia - the book that for ages fans have wondered if they’ll ever have the honor of reading. And I’ve realize that for the Potter community, it means more than just finding out additional information about Harry’s world.
It also means one more midnight release.
One more opportunity to come together and celebrate the books.
One more reason to don our robes and ties and scarves.
One more chance to laugh and cry and gasp at Jo’s brilliance.
And one more way to feel like part of something bigger than ourselves.
Jo has given us so much, yet still finds it in herself to give us so much more. And for that, we will always be grateful.
