23andMe: Genealogy/DNA Testing

https://www.23andme.com/

Recently, we were informed of a company that was providing information based on DNA regarding ancestry. This has apparently become more popular with the many technological advances, making it pretty affordable. They send you a kit, you supply the DNA (typically saliva) and they run the DNA in their labs. The information you receive regarding ancestry includes global similarity, relative finders, and DNA (haplogroup) matches. In addition to ancestry information, the DNA test also provides health information such as disease risk, drug response and traits.

I recommend doing your own research to see if this is a good option for you regarding your own family searching. It can provide information that you would not receive otherwise and can be very insightful. It also allows you to connect with others who have taken the tests who have matches to your haplogroup.

our gene base came in!

Yeah I’m excited lol.

According to Genebase.com… Haplogroup E first originated in Northeast Africa over 50,000 years ago and descendents of this haplogroup journeyed north and south of the Mediterranean Sea into Northern Africa and the Middle East.  Today, Haplogroup E is found at high frequency in Egypt.  The two most well known branches of the E lineage include subgroups E3a and E3b.

:)

Now we want to find my mothers lineage and my dads maternal side haha

Family History

I’m currently reading through Bryan Sykes’ The Seven Daughters Of Eve. It talks about the mitochondrial DNA and the seven “daughters” corresponds to certain haplogroups.  I know this probably sounds boring, especially for people who know their ancestry (lucky!!). I’ve had a dna test done, and all I know is that I am haplogroup V (or Velda). Unfortunately, I am adopted so I have no family history.  It strikes a cord for me because it seems like so many people in America are “hyphenated” Americans (Irish-American, Italian-American, etc.), but I could never say my ethnicity. I guess what I am trying to get at is be happy if you know where you come from, and be open to learning about where you come from.
