Why I Hate Griffining
![]()
So Brent of @BurgundyBlog managed to single-handedly start a nationwide trend of people taking pictures of themselves in Robert Griffin III’s seated, arms-raised, post-touchdown pose. This is a pretty impressive bit of social media work and VERY 2012, and Brent deserves all the kudos in the world for it. With that said … UGH PLEASE MAKE IT STOP. Whomever is behind @StopGriffining provides a terrific summary of the opposition point of view, but here for good measure are a few reasons why the trend rubs me wrong:
No Respect

Griffining may be losing steam, but it sure was a good run while it lasted. The following remarks taken from Deadspin make me proud to have been a part of it:
Griffining is stupid, and you should hate yourself if you find it amusing. (Unlike Tebowing, which somehow circled from clever to dumb and back to clever.) Yet SportsCenter devoted two separate segments to this “phenomenon,” totaling 3.25 minutes, topped off by Stuart Scott giving us a handy demonstration on how to Griffin. Even worse, they couldn’t help but include a few handy Tebowing references for good measure. SportsCenter is dead and we are all dead and this is some kind of horrible purgatory where we are paying the price for our sins.
Deadspin writers are mostly a-holes, so I got a real kick out of annoying this guy. The same article also mentions the hilarious fact that SportsCenter spent more air time last week on Griffining than on the NHL lockout!
I heart Griffining. Big thanks to all of you that helped take it national.
