John ColtraneSATURDAY JAZZ BRUNCH: Good Bait performed by John Coltrane - Coltrane was a brilliant composer as the albums Giant Steps and A Love Supreme demonstrated. But this post is about another great composer who was instrumental in arranging and writing some of the most renowned music of the hard bop era. Tadd Dameron worked with such greats as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, and Bllly Eckstine and while little is heard about him outside of jazz circles, he was a legend to those who understand that much of the bop era sound was in large part due to his significant contributions.
Good Bait was one of those Dameron tunes, originally written for Count Basie’s orchestra. I love where Coltrane takes this tune and is one of those tunes that I play when I want to hear something happy. In fact, the Soultrane album is quite excellent with the Eckstine ballad I Want To Talk About You, another ballad Theme for Ernie, and the Berlin tune Russian Lullaby. Have an excellent brunch, give this album a spin, and enjoy the rest of the day.

I have this same song by two different musicians and I like Nina Simone’s version better than Dizzy Gillespie’s. I like it rolling in bluesy moods, not shining in swing. It just sounds done right to me.

Provocateur
Up and coming from Charleston is this double a-side release; Red Hearts Of Gold/Provocateur. We haven’t quite decided which one we prefer as they are both equally delectable (and rumour has it a rather naughty underground remix is coming our way too… ooooer). Haunting vocals and dramatic peaks and lulls, Charleston continue with their original, fresh sound. Reminds us of a modern take of Joy Division with a more dancey influence. We like, we like alot.
SICK.
