“If we don't continuously give back, soon we won't have many places to receive from”

—My grandma (But I think she stole it from somewhere secretly)

Giving

I need to do something.

Five years ago I went to India to serve some of the most underprivileged people in the world. I was inspired and moved in a way I had never been before, so I came back to the States and started a student group to raise money and awareness for the Dalit people of India. The group became affiliated with a larger non-profit, and I was acting “President”. The group was eventually picked up by a church and my involvement seemed to run its course. It was one of my biggest life passions, thus far.

My freshman year of college I became the Director of Philanthropy of my fraternity (and as V.P. I later re-named it to be the Director of Community Service because it fit the position more) and was able to commit my time to that. And Delts started the philanthropy “Delta Queen” that year, which is now an annual event.

However, now that college is over… I don’t know what to do! I need to give back in some way. Not only do I think giving back is important for our community/world… I think it is one of the easiest/best ways to gain contentment and satisfaction in life. I think a lot of people undervalue how much helping others can enrich your own life… even though I know that sounds cliche.

Anyway… it’s been on my mind a lot lately. I want to DO something. I want to impact people. And I want to find that fire again that motivated me to make some sort of difference. But I have learned over the years that it’s not something I can force upon myself. I don’t want to “do community service” because I think I should; I want to find a real passion for something and then devote myself to it. I’m going to continue praying about what that something might be. Gotta keep my eyes open.
