Grab bags, or ‘Fukubukuro’, are put together and sold by merchant in the New Year. ‘Fukubukuro’ means ‘a bag full of happiness’. It is said that if it costs 1,000 yen, the contents will be worth from 1,000 to 10,000 yen. You can not see what’s inside until you buy it. Nowadays, grab bags worth 50,000 yen or 100,000 yen are sold. These contain very nice items indeed. This is why you will see lots of people standing in line waiting for the opening of department stores on January 1st.
