Griffinilla and SoGreatAndPowerful- 40 Winks

Lyrics: all the townsfolk, they are fast asleep

chasing memories or just counting sheep

but I don’t need it. I don’t think so. I’m not crazy. I don’t think so

though she’ll never get to dream

who needs all that forgetting

there’s a tapestry of stars

look how thankless they are

these eyes these eyes

so heavy heavy heavy

make time make time

i’m ready ready ready

all the townsfolk, they say rise and shine

chasing daylight or just killing time

Is it secret? I don’t think so. Am I selfish? I don’t think so

Thoughts: Forty Winks is a character that can never sleep. Ever. She stays sane by talking to plants, gazing into the stars, walking at midnight, and thinking of good sandwiches to make in the morning. In the world of inconsequential, fluffy ask blogs about ponies who cuddle with ponies from other tumblrs and answer silly questions, Forty Winks is a refreshing ask blog, and it’s fitting that it gets a theme song by two of the more refreshing artists out on the pone scene.

40 Winks is a lovely combination of Griffinilla’s signature songwriting and lyricism and SoGreatAndPowerful’s lovely production that feels like an undreamable dream come true. Everything about the song wonderfully paints the life and character of Forty Winks. The lyrics creates a stark contrast between the serene lives of others and the dreariness of Forty’s daily bouts while also implying that there’s something more fulfilling about Forty’s life than others around her, Though she’ll never get to dream, who needs all that forgetting* and that they take some of the best things in life for granted. All the townsfolk, they say rise and shine… Chasing daylight or just killing time…

The production also helps create the illusion of what it must feel like to have 24/7 365 sleep deprivation from the schizophrenic instrumentation (there’s a sax solo in there!) to the sudden voice pitch changes to the frequent tempo changes. But it’s also a beautiful, layered composition that stays wistful without being depressing.

40 Winks is a beautiful song for a beautiful character. As of writing, Last.fm is telling me I’ve played it 11 times today, and who can blame me? It’s a wonderful, infinitely listenable song that you should play now.
