    My First Review on RateMyProfessor

and it made me cry. I am so happy.

“I dreaded this class but came to like it due to this instructor’s enthusiasm. Assignments were creative and engaging. Good at motivating those who seemed disinterested. Doesn’t tolerate laziness. Was pleasantly surprised by this young teacher. Expect to work hard and learn a lot!”

Adventures of a First Year Teacher in a Third World Country

Adventures of a First Year Teacher in a Third World Country
Adventures of a First Year Teacher in a Third World Country is a collection of the author’s experiences in Bolivia during the 1980’s. It describes his encounter with a Nazi war criminal, the surgery he performed on his own foot, and the time a policeman tried to shoot him. Sometimes humorous, sometimes touching, but always interesting, this description of Bolivia and its people takes the reader to a part of the world most Americans seldom see.

    Yearbook

    First year teacher, come August.

    Also apparently yearbook adviser.

Um, anyone have tips, please? I’ve seen quite a bit of “whatever you do, do not take on yearbook.” Anything to plan for/expect?

    A question for teachers

When you were a new teacher, did you solicit help from teachers at your school? Did you randomly pop into rooms asking for help or did you go to the teachers who reached out to you first? Do you feel like it’s the responsibility of a new teacher to go ask everyone for help?

    And the Results are in

90% pass rate for my students on their Earth Science SOL (the end of course standardized tests in VA). There were many happy surprises of students scoring higher than anticipated. Those that didn’t pass fell into two categories - absent 75% of class time, or missed passing by a question or two.

Since it’s my first year teaching in VA, I didn’t know what to expect. My teacher/perfectionist side would have preferred 100%, but I guess 90% is good?
