one of the things that bothers me most about fandom is the gross oversimplifications of characters. like obviously not everyone does it—and for comics fandom sometimes (often) the source material is guilty of this as well—but fandom seems like, determined to turn three dimensional, complex characters into stereotypes.
not just with jason, that everyone likes to turn into the ~bad robin~ or the angry jerk. remember that time that he FORGAVE, AND FELT SORRY FOR, THE DUDE WHO ALMOST KILLED HIM? not to mention like—not all anger is the same. FEELINGS ARE COMPLICATED WHY AREN’T YOU CONSIDERING WHERE THIS ANGER COMES FROM AKA BEING ANGRY ON BEHALF OF PEOPLE WHO ARE VULNERABLE AKA HIS COMPASSION. but like, no, it’s everyone.
like, with dick, you don’t get the juxtaposition of his sometimes-bubbliness with the fact that he can be annoying and impatient, or with the fact that he’s got a nasty habit of pushing people away, or with the way that he can be self-centered (not that he doesn’t care about people he loves, just that he can have a hard time seeing things from their perspective as opposed to his own). let me tell you, that guy is not a perfect big brother. he tries really, really hard, and his siblings are all important to him, but he’s far from perfect and he’s fucked up multiple times with all his siblings.
and then steph. like. can we remember that steph is more than just a cute bubbly blonde? ie, she’s got endless determination and willpower and stubbornness? and she can also be pretty judgmental and petty? and like please don’t forget her anger. *please*. she gets angry because she lives in a crapsack world, and there are people who are getting hurt and she’s doing something to help them, but she can’t do *enough*, and all of these douchebags come along and she does all she can but it’s not ENOUGH so there’s nothing left but anger and will.
don’t get me started on tim either. like if your tim characterization starts and ends with “woobie uke” i don’t have any words for you other than get out of my face ok bye
………………………..this was supposed to be a short post but it turned into all the robins so while i’m at it can i just say that will you please fucking stop saying that damian would hate jason for fucking his mom, and please fucking look at why he’s angry and what his actual values are and how hard he tries and stop just making him into an all-purpose lil demon.
