“If you are going to converge your storage and data networking, here is what is going to happen. You are going to decide (however your IT department makes these decisions) to purchase whichever product set your storage VAR or array vendor tells you they support. Then you will build it out and make sure it all works well together. You are not going to worry about whether a product does or doesn’t use QCN or whether each switch is a FCF or not. You are going to rely on your VAR or array vendor to do the messy conformance and performance testing for you and ensure that you can, in fact, ensure lossless FCoE SAN operation of your Ethernet network. You are not going to worry about whether the routing protocol is the IETF’s TRILL, the IEEE SPB, Cisco’s FabricPath, or Brocade's multi-path Ethernet routing protocol (I can’t call what Brocade is doing TRILL. I just can’t).”

FCoE: Standards Don’t Matter; Vendor Choice Does - Network Computing

Cisco takes the lead in realizing Ethernet fiber channel (FCoE) Products, ASIC standard waits to make

Though network that carry on a few days ago trade one technical to can celebrate joyously network in exhibition, but a lot of suppliers are in the large-scale batch productino Ethernet fiber channel (FCoE) Before the chips, are all waiting for the completion of relevant ASIC and standard formulation. Cisco Systems, Emulex, Mellanox and QLogic have all announced first FCoE products of theirs in Orlando’s memory network center.

FCoE aims at being connected to one of a great deal of efforts of the single network server, storing and network homework, this kind of single network is used mainly in can save cost and future data centre of the power consumption.

Besides a few several companies such as Cisco, most suppliers have not finished corresponding new ASIC and software yet. , still in continual renovation, possible new Nexus 5000 switchboard of Cisco need the software staging with compatible with T11 and IEEE group because of the intersection of FCoE and standard respectively.

Linley Group (the city of mountain scene of California) Pointing out ” whether these products initial is to used for cultivating by marketting and letting user not weighed by the technology going mainly ” .

Wheeler points out the new LightPulse Lp21000 server card that Emulex is used in FCoE has adopted four chips - -Including single Ethernet and fiber channel control chip, and PCI Express exchange and address resolution chip. Emulex will not announce the concrete power consumption of this server card, but show it is lower than the upgrade of Express slot 25W. This company plans to introduce integrated intensity more high products in 2009.

“This the intersection of cost and most low or the intersection of power and the intersection of efficiency and most high product, it is comparatively speaking like feasible verification rather than batch productino products even more, “Wheeler says so.

“It is our object time in the first half of 2009, because the industrial circle needs to put out the competitive scheme when the time comes, “The chief engineer Renato Recio of IBM server network says. “If what I got is two or core number of triple, not then worth does it in this way, “Recio says so, the demand for ASIC of the hint too.

A top technician of the switchboard manufacturers Brocade Communications of fiber channel’s agrees to this view too.

“The supplier participating in attempts to release in 2008 and is earlier than the canonial products, using for appraising and test, so can drive the development of carrying on the integrated silicon component in 2009, ” Senior executive president John Hufferd introduces the technology of Brocade so. “The work that will be finished in 2009 will be based on the use of the embodiment to improve, and offer the feasible, scheme that can be disposed for even data centre in 2010, “He adds.

Cisco offers because of one of the a few several companies of ASIC products at present. Cisco is responsible for in charge of Dante Malagrino and introducing, Nexus 5000 adopts up to five ASICs of the product market of data centre, include two key chips, and there are many kinds of embodiments.

” you need it in order to connect the speed and deal with the hardware resource of the affairs, ” Malagrino says.

A master ASIC is used in Ethernet to control, deal with the data packet and buffer the fictitious port controller that arranges in an order of flowrate and can’t harm in Cisco system. Another one is crossbar switch not blocked, has it over total bandwidth and Integrated flowrate dispatcher device of the megabits per second.

This system still adopts the Administrative unit based on Intel CPU, that ran is by the new operating system of Cisco and Nuova Systems common development. Nuova Systems is a start-up company with 200 staff, develop this product and is purchased by Cisco this week. This OS one can be used in the switchboard of first fiber channel of Cisco on the basis of mixture of storing OS, also can be used in Cisco classical IOS network software.

“The standard formulation group has already finished all to make the compatible physical layer of hardware define, “Malagrino says. “probably we all right claim observe ( Standard) Already Ready ’ When the products are in May outloading) ,Or the worst situation is that we need to carry on the upgrade of the software, ” He adds.

T11 norm used for FCoE may be finished in August, Recio says. However, IEEE defines the work which can’t harm edition Ethernet has much work to finish, in this way FCoE can obtain the foundation that have robustness even more.

“It is not enough yet for us to think progress that is made, it is unable to advance and just as our situation falls into inside the rut, so I convened these persons in 12 months, formed a new group which is named CEE Authors, “Recio says.

Can’t harm the standard field Converged Enhanced Ethernet and is often used, the group that so as to name is making great efforts to finish the recommendation in three special fields before the end of May, later would refer to IEEE group. Some suppliers hope to finish the products based on this recommendation, regard it as ” 0th ” ,Later would carry on staging to it according to the stipulations of final standard of IEEE group.

“We think this is a good thing, and we will tell the 0th products of customer of ours it will be very good, “Recio says.

Recio is a president of this CEE author’s group, its member comes from Broadcom, Brocade, Cisco, Emulex, Fujitsu, IBM, Intel, Juniper, QLogic and Sun.

Multihop FCoE and its "readiness".

Recently I have read some very insightful articles on Multihop FCoE networks and whether they are ready for “prime-time” or not. I especially enjoyed this last article by J Metz that serves as inspiration for this post. This is a very interesting debate, although it can be misleading, as there are different “flavors” of FCoE that can get mixed up. To over-simplify things quite a lot:

  • Lossless Ethernet Forwarders, which just blindly move frames around.
  • FIP Snooping Bridges, which do some FC things, but not all.
  • NPV Bridges, which emulate being a server (to me, this is actually faking multi hop).
  • Full FCF Bridges, which have a full FC stack and behave as traditional FC fabric switches. To me, and I think that to others too this is the real deal.

I believe the real wonder with “Real FCF Multihop” is that in reality it is the same old SAN design we have been working with for ages. The only change is the fact that the FC switch is now also working, at a separate level, as a LAN switch. But SAN designs remain untouched.

FIP Snooping solutions, “Lossless Ethernet blind forwarders” and even to some extent NPV mean some kind of change to how SANs are designed and managed. This is not the case with Full FCF Multihop, as it just means you are using Ethernet to carry FC frames in your cabling.

Mechanisms for FC traffic protection and lossless transmission have been there for ages too (DCBX and all). As you very cleverly state, Edge FCoE has been using it for years with success. The only difference is now they are being applied to ISLs, instead of edge N-F links.

A true multi hop FCoE SAN is no different from a regular SAN except for the encapsulation of the carrier frames, and the fact that the Fabric switch is also behaving as LAN switch in a separate plane.

I agree with Steve Foskett’s opinion, linked in the first line, about the fact that implementations that don’t go the whole way actually represent a change in how SANs are perceived: is a FIP snooping bridge really a “hop” in my SAN, or is it not? How can I troubleshoot the flogi process in that scenario?

Full FCF Multihop FCoE is not a leap of faith though, nor a matter of waiting several years to get accustomed to a new technology, such as what happened with server virtualization. This is more akin to adding a new routing protocol like OSPF on top of your RIPv2 running routers: it’s done in the same box as something else, but it’s the same old operation, the same old troubleshooting tools, the same old skill set that’s required with all other FC networks… because, in fact, it is just another FC network.

A Fibre Channel network. It’s only another FC network.

“Dense-mode FCoE, where every LAN switch is also Fiber Channel Forwarder (FCF; equivalent to an IP router). FCoE frames are routed hop-by-hop and FCoE routing does not interact with STP or TRILL (because FCoE is not bridged). It’s also easy to implement SAN A/SAN B separation (two independent non-overlapping paths from each server to each storage device) as you control hop-by-hop flow of the FC traffic. Sparse-mode FCoE, where LAN switches bridge FCoE frames like any L2 traffic and optionally provide FIP snooping. Because FCoE is bridged in this design, sparse-mode FCoE needs stable L2 transport which TRILL can provide more reliably than existing STP-based networks. Since you can’t control hop-by-hop FCoE traffic flow (it’s bridged according to whatever TRILL or STP thinks is the best path), it’s way harder to implement the SAN separation.”
