Trevor Powers of Youth Lagoon is back with a follow-up to his bedroom pop masterpiece, The Year of Hibernation, and we’ve got our first taste of the new material. “Dropla” is a track from the forthcoming album, Wondrous Bughouse, and finds the artist branching out from his subtle, quiet compositions, to something more expansive and layered. “Dropla” is over six minutes long and while it certainly sounds like the familiar dreamy sound of Youth Lagoon, it stretches and grows into something akin to an old Sufjan Stevens’ track (or perhaps a latter era Mercury Rev) in the way that the delicate vocals float in and out of layers of orchestral synths, guitars, and percussion as the track builds to a crest before crashing back down and quietly, beautifully, floats back out again. Highly recommended.
