I’m babysitting my 2 year old sister and she wanted me to read her a bedtime story but her books are all an insult to literature everywhere, so I read her some Johnlock fluff…

***UPDATE: please read this before you reblog***

Corsets: Facts & Myths

isobelcarr.com

For those of you writing Victorian AUs or stories…my favorite tidbit:

Sex and the corset: Since I’m busy telling you that your heroines should not only be in corsets, but that if they’re going to have any kind of encounter at a ball or other social function that they’d be doing it while still laced up (and in all their other undergarments too), I feel compelled to let you in on the dirty little secret of the corset. Any kind of corset (even the Regency ones) will slightly restrict breathing and move the “bellows” action from the chest to the belly (think, deep abdominal breathing). Even slight breathing restriction will cause mild auto-erotic asphyxiation, which heightens the sexual response. Sex in a corset is intense! And the tighter the corset, the more intense it is. Any Victorian heroine game enough to try this, is going to be in for a revelation.

when searching for fanfictions it’s like ‘if they don’t have sex at least once, what’s the point’

the world isn't fond of pretty wishes

Note: Hanji is a complex character so I couldn’t quite capture her/him/them (curse you English, I can’t call Hanji an it). And the story was getting really long so yeah. Also all the child!eren fanart was still tagged as rivaere/ereri/riren- so i figured it was okay here too.

For that one anon.

The brat loves him only as a little boy can: clumsily, and with all his heart. Perhaps, of all the boy’s different skins, Rivaille is most fond of this one. [platonic]

-

The sun is a streak on the edge of the world when Rivaille finds a little boy stashed in clothes too big for him, drooling and sleeping as all children are best at. That, and shitting. He stops first because children aren’t supposed to be here, and lingers because the kid looked too familiar to be anything good.

“Eren?” He starts suspiciously, and green eyes blink up at him curiously, before stretching tiny fingers. Reluctant, Rivaille helps the boy up and blinks when it attaches itself to his legs. The shirt is drooping off, and he sees the boy shudder.

The boy stares up at him imploringly, as if he expected Rivaille to help comfort him. Children.

Still, Rivaille sheds his own jacket and wraps it around the boy. Maybe the brat had more forms than they realized.

The boy sneezes, and uses his jacket as a make-shift tissue. Shivers at something colder emanating from the man before him.

-

“I don’t know,” Hanji says.

“You don’t know,” Rivaille repeats.

“No clue,” Hanji agrees, and watches, chin in hand, as Eren paws at Rivaille’s legs, eager to climb onto his shoulders. A sly smile. “Look who’s become attached.”

“Don’t play with me.”

Hanji taps a finger against the tabletop. “You know what this is reminding me of? Animals imprinting. I’ve read about it before. He thinks you’re his mother.”

“I am a man.”

“A very manly mother,” Hanji concedes with amusement, before turning more serious. “When did you find him?”

“A few hours ago.”

“It might be temporary, like his Titan form,” Hanji says, and beckons Eren over. Eren listens, letting Rivaille loose for the moment, and pads over to Hanji.

After a while Rivaille speaks up. “So, what’s wrong with him?”

“There’s nothing wrong, that’d be saying something’s wrong with Eren! I’ll need to conduct more research.”

A beat of silence only interrupted by giggles as Eren played with Hanji’s boots.

“So why don’t you do it now?”

“Well, for starters, it’s really late, or early. I don’t know what you’ve been doing up, and Eren’s a child that shouldn’t be deprived of sleep. Me neither, just so you know. You kind of interrupted me leaving.”

Rivaille sighs.

“You need to take care of him for the time being,” Hanji yawns, “and don’t let anyone find out who he is before we find out why he’s a child. Especially his friends. Especially your squad.”

“Why?”

“People might not understand, and not understanding breeds fear. And we all know what that leads to.”

Eren runs back to Rivaille as Hanji stands up, whines for a pick up.

“Annoying,” Rivaille says, but concedes, winces as Eren giggles very loudly in his ear, cupping chubby fingers around his hair.

-

Eren is already under his watch, but now things are more delicate. He can’t just stow the brat somewhere else. So he brings him to his room, makes a pathetic bed for sleep in the corner and turns off the lights. Things can’t be that simple.

Eren drools in his sleep, or at least in this form. He is also very very clingy. Rivaille doesn’t sleep for the night.

-

Mikasa finds out the next day. He’s slightly relieved, though he doesn’t know why she came stumbling in his room like she knew the boy was somewhere in it. Perhaps they had some weird connection.

“Eren!” she says, relieved but confused when she sees what he’s become. The boy blinks at her before toddling over and demanding a ride on her shoulders.

“Up!” he demands and she concedes, smiling softly, before turning to him with a serious expression.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing,” Rivaille answers blandly, “I found him like that.”

She doesn’t look like she believes him, which is fine, he doesn’t really care.

“Hanji wants him,” Rivaille says and she doesn’t need to hear it twice. The room feels empty, and Rivaille waves away the thought.

Later, when Eren somehow finds him and attaches himself to his legs, and Mikasa is watching, arms crossed, he will groan but pat the brat’s hair before he does something stupid like cry on him. If the answering smile is bright and happy and all delightful, well that’s just a bonus.

-

Eren doesn’t change back, and slowly Rivaille doesn’t mind as much. Hanji is still diligent, but the ‘cure’ seems less and less likely to appear. Somehow, Mikasa has waned off his concerned friends so they aren’t suspicious. Rivaille is curious about what she has told them but doesn’t pry. If she is slightly bitter that Eren prefers Rivaille over her, Rivaille also doesn’t pry, though he is smug and he lets her know it.

And one day when he returns with blood he can’t get out of his shirt, and Eren grasps it with too pale fingers, and chants, “I missed you! It’s icky, what’s wrong? I missed you, why didn’t you come back? Where did this come from, it feels weird. Did you miss me? I missed you.”

No one will fault him when he hugs Eren to his chest, and breathes in a world he wishes he could be a part of instead of this one, for it is obvious now that Eren is in a different world, for how could he still smile, still breathe without choking on the dead in the air?

-

The boy looks at him without blood streaking his face, without some hidden sentimentality in his gaze, without admiration for what he’s done and what he will (kill, kill, kill) without anything but honest affection, and Rivaille wishes it’d stay like that for a while (forever is a stream of want in his mind, but he’s not willing to admit it). A curve of small fingers around his own, and Rivaille’s never been fond of kids, especially idiotic ones, but this is not the same, he thinks to himself. This world has no patience for childish innocence, but Rivaille does, this time around. He’ll make sure Eren grows up with all his heart (he’s already built the reality in his mind).

“Eren,” he says, kneels down to be eye level with the child. Eren only tilts his head, and grabs Rivaille’s face with both hands, giggling as he pinches. Rivaille lets him.

“Eren, listen to me,” Rivaille says, and Eren, hearing the tone, stares at him imploringly.

“You like me.”

“Love, love, love!” Eren corrects with enthusiasm, throwing his arms around Rivaille’s neck and struggling to climb on. Rivaille chuckles slightly, and straightens, wrapping his arms around the small body.

“If,” Rivaille says, hesitates, “if we couldn’t get you back to your former self. Would you like to stay with me?” It is a foolhardy request. Rivaille is gone half the time with blood stitched in one hand, and death sewn in the other. He is certainly not the best figure for anything than what he is now: mankind’s strongest soldier. But let him be selfish this one time, and for the rest of his life if things go right.

Eren is silent for a long time, and Rivaille wonders if Eren is seriously contemplating what he’s about to do. Maybe he underestimates the childish mind.

“Eren?” He asks softly, and pulls back to look at him.

“Tch,” Rivaille says, and hugs Eren back to his chest, cradling his head softly, “falling asleep on me. How arrogant.” Despite his words, a small smile lingers on the corporal’s face. The world owed him this.

-

He wakes up to a room that’s too quiet and too empty.

“Shit,” Rivaille says.

-

He finds Eren with Mikasa hugging him closely a few minutes later. Except it is not the Eren Rivaille was hoping for. A blanket is wrapped around the boy’s too big shoulders, and his too old eyes glance up at him.

“Eren,” Rivaille says.

“Corporal,” Eren replies, anxious, and Mikasa pulls back to stare at Rivaille as well. “I don’t remember much, but Mikasa told me what happened, and ah, thanks for taking care of me.”

Rivaille stopped listening at ‘I don’t remember much’.

“Good,” he says, turns away because there is nothing left in Eren’s eyes that suggest he remembers, and that is for the best, it is best, it is better this way. The words are hollow, carved out by disappointment and despair and all the unwanted things that accompany living.

“Good,” he lies.

-

He almost expects to wake up to warm tiny fingers latched on his shoulder, and drools that he could barely tolerate, but he doesn’t. He expects to wake up to childish adoration, and a smile that could top the world if it pleased, but he doesn’t.

Rivaille expects he will forget the child, because it seemed it has forgotten him, but he doesn’t.

He doesn’t.

It is better this way. Besides, he never said yes, did he?

-

The sun is a curve on the edge of the world when Eren stumbles upon Rivaille. The corporal is wiping his blades clean.

“Corporal,” Eren greets politely, and frowns when Rivaille doesn’t look up. He moves to leave when Rivaille finally speaks up.

“Eren,” he says, and Eren turns around. Rivaille searches for something, anything. But there is only a trace of fearful admiration where childish adoration used to be, a world of pain and death in the eyes where childish innocence should lay, and everything Rivaille misses.

“Is something wrong, Corporal?” Eren prompts hesitantly.

“Nothing,” Rivaille replies, turning back to his blades and ignoring Eren. Eren picks up the dismissal.

Love, love, love!”

“Nothing,” he says, to taste the word on his lips and the ashes of could have been’s.

For the record, I’ve never been hypnotized and don’t know much about it. I just did some quick googling for research. Hope you guys like it!

sing a song for us little bird

The best I could do, love. Mermaid AU. Also, I know it’s supposed to be merman but cut me some slack, yeah.

_____________________________________________________

“Aren’t you ever scared I’ll pull you down and eat you?” Eren whispers against Rivaille’s lips, when the sun is burning the color that belongs to royalty’s jewelry, and the wind cuts him lightly with its sharpness. Rivaille only scoffs, leans back.

“Don’t be stupid,” Rivaille says, flicking Eren’s nose, “as if I’d ever let you do that.”

Eren laughs and wraps his arms around Rivaille’s neck. The pirate straightens with a grunt, wraps his arms around Eren’s bare waist.

“That tail is a lot heavier than it looks, brat,” Rivaille drawls, and Eren only leans his head against Rivaille’s.

“That’s how I swim, you humans are too light for the sea to let you stay down long.”

“Right,” Rivaille says, doubtful, and breathes against Eren’s neck. “I wonder if they’ll be a day when I won’t smell seawater on you.”

“Doubtful,” Eren replies, and blinks, tapping Rivaille with excitement. “What’s that thing?”

Rivaille sets Eren down on the sand and turns to see what the mermaid was just pointing to. He grimaces.

“It’s a bird, looks like its wing is broken. Or it’s stupid enough to think it’ll find any bugs to eat out here.”

“Bring it here,” Eren demands and Rivaille shoots him an annoyed look but obeys, cradling the bird in one hand and dumping it on the sand near Eren. Its wing must be broken, if it wasn’t flying away.

“Do birds eat fish?”

“Do I look like some bird expert? It eats shit, for all I care,” Rivaille answers but Eren is already gone and returning with a small fish in hand, nervous grin lighting up his wet face. Eren sets the fish down and smiles when the bird pecks at the flesh harshly, hungry. After it’s done, the mermaid leans down to stare at the bird.

“Sing a song for me, little bird,” Eren says, but the bird only chirps.

“Birds only screech, Eren,” Rivaille says, “besides, aren’t mermaids supposed to be the ones singing?”

The bird hops away as Eren frowns. “I don’t sing.”

“Well, supposed to,” Rivaille repeats, and Eren kisses him to shut him up.

-

The next time they meet Eren notices the sharp wounds on the pirate, and runs over each of them carefully.

“Your friend visited me the other day,” Rivaille says as he drapes over the mermaid, letting the other examine each cut. Eren blinks, confused.

“Mikasa, I think it was,” the man elaborates. Eren sighs, apologizing.

“She’s always despised humans,” Eren says, and Rivaille chuckles into his neck.

“You really are naïve,” the pirate says, “she despises me because she likes you, idiot.”

“Mikasa?” Eren frowns, “no, I grew up with her, I would know.”

The pirate grabs Eren’s face suddenly and crushes their lips together.

Rivaille breathes, “No, no you wouldn’t.”

-

“Mikasa,” Eren starts and swallows when the other mermaid turns to look at him. “This sounds stupid, but, um, you don’t like me, do you?”

Mikasa blinks slowly, before looking away. “I know about that human, Eren. All I ask is that you let me try.”

“I never knew,” Eren says lamely, because Mikasa has always been close and he had thought that she hovered over him because she thought he was a brat and young and naïve, but now it makes so much sense.

Mikasa laughs, and the sound cuts both of their hearts.

“No,” she agrees, “no, you wouldn’t.”

-

Not all humans are like Rivaille. Eren forgets this when it matters. The net digs into his tail tightly and he hisses in pain as he struggles to get out but it’s no use, the humans have caught him and they will not let him go.

When he breaks the surface he winces at the sun’s burn and the greasiness of the pirate’s smile when he sees Eren.

The pirate whistles as he reels in the net, “Look at what I caught here, captain! Now you won’t have to see this filthy boat again, what with the load this pretty little thing will bring.” The other crew mates crowd around the pirate, expressions of glee on their faces as they realize they wouldn’t have to sail out to sea again.

“Stop it!” Eren shouts, “I can give you treasure if you want, as much as you need, just-” don’t kill me.

“Ha! The thing’s trying to bargain with us. Don’t you worry your little head over it, your scales are more than enough.”

No, Eren thinks as meaty hands grab the net, scrape against him as they pull him in and release the net, please, no, Rivaille-

“What are you little shits going on about now?” A familiar voice snaps, and the small gathering parts to let him through. Rivaille notices him immediately, falters in his step. It takes one second for comprehension to dawn, two seconds for fear, three seconds for indecision, something Eren never associated Rivaille with. Four seconds for the captain to reach for his swords, and then nothing, nothing at all.

Something slams against him harshly, a familiar weight, and there’s commotion, shouts and screams.

“Shit, there’s another one! Where the fuck did she get that sword-”, cut off like something dying. Something bumps against him again, a groan, before a final push and Eren is back in the water, still cocooned in the net, but he’s safe, the word churns itself in his mind as Eren catches his breath.

Something red follows him down. His eyes widen as warm hands reach for him, wrap around his frame through the rope, a weak breath near his ear.

Eren.”

(She was always better at jumping, wasn’t she).

-

A sword rests where her heart should. She lies on top of him as her life bleeds out, staining the ocean a pretty red, and Eren stutters, reaches for her through the net.

“Mikasa,” Eren pleads, “please, no, don’t, don’t, not like Mom, Mikasa, please.

She laughs weakly, closes her eyes and leans into Eren’s hand, “I love you, Eren.”

Eren cries, “I love you too, Mikasa. So please try, for me.”

“Only as a fish may love a bird,” Mikasa breathes. “With great pain and effort. I don’t want to hurt you, Eren. You do not have to force yourself to love me because of of death.”

“I don’t- you’re not forcing anything Mikasa, just-”

“Love me despite it,” she says, and Eren chokes. The ocean stills, as if in mourning.

(He ends up having to use the blade to cut himself out of the net).

-

Eventually, he comes back to the shore, though every breath there feels like a betrayal, a stab. Rivaille is already waiting, clothes torn and face dirty with blood (it is the filthiest Eren has ever seen him, but he’s sure more blood has seen those hands before).

“Eren,” Rivaille breathes, relieved, and reaches for him, hesitates when Eren winces. He lets his hands drop.

“That girl,” Rivaille swallows, “what happened to her?”

“She was infected by humans,” Eren drones, and sighs when Rivaille looks away. He notices the wounds. “What happened?”

If Rivaille notes the slight reluctance he does not press. “Attempted mutiny. They knew they couldn’t beat me.”

It hurts that no one ever can. Eren smiles weakly. “I’m glad.”

“Don’t lie to me, brat,” Rivaille snaps, and pulls him closer. “You aren’t very good at it.”

“No,” Eren agrees, “I just thought you’d let it die.”

Rivaille flinches back, and between them there grows a weed, a poison blooming, a distance.

(What he fails to notice is this: Mikasa did not die by human hands, she died by his. This is love).

-

Humans do not live as mermaids live.

A bird may love a fish.

Eren runs his fingers over the slight crease of age in Rivaille’s expression, the slight fold of death approaching in his heart, and closes his eyes as Rivaille grasps Eren’s too soft fingers.

But where would they live?”

Rivaille coughs and blood spills out, and Eren wipes it off quickly. Eren does not understand sickness as humans do, mermaids are not touched by it- the sea is that forgiving at least. He wishes he did, so he could lie beside Rivaille as equals, as something that could work. Rivaille falls asleep in his arms and the mermaid wipes the blood into the sand where it bleeds.

No, he thinks, as the sun dulls, the winds soften, and the ocean quiet. No, humans do not live as mermaids live.

But they bleed just the same.

-

He chokes in the water and he drowns in the air, he’s not fit to be anywhere. So the little mermaid bows over the shore, tail a dull color in the water, skin burning lobster red, and he realizes what love is.

Love is watching someone die. Mother. Mikasa. Rivaille. Eren watches as the sun loses its zeal, and the sea stains dark with poison. He watches, and he waits for nothing at all, because the only mermaids granted immortality are the ones that don’t want it.

The little bird sings,

Poor little mermaid, who’s going to watch you die?
