Through Being Cool was the first emo album I ever heard and it was probably the first album that actually steered me away from punk and the post-grunge style of alternative rock. There was so much emotion in Chris Conley’s voice and lyrics that you could sing out loud to. There was also a level of relate-ability to what they were singing about.
I’ve heard a lot of people refer to Through Being Cool as a genre defining album and I can agree with them on this one. I’m not going to get into the argument of who the pioneers of emo were or who were the best because there are quite a bit of bands whose names have been thrown out there and really it is going to vary with each person you talk to. However, Saves The Day and The Get Up Kids, another favorite of mine, played a big part in emo starting to take off in the late 90’s and early 00’s.
