Foot Soldiers
Eliza RickmanEliza Rickman, “Foot Soldiers.”
If listening to this song doesn’t convince you to buy Eliza’s amazing new album O, You Sinners, then you may want to see a doctor about your ears being broken. Eliza is a phenomenally talented singer-songwriter and pianist based in the Bay Area; she plays toy piano and wears birds in her hair. Kind of a gothic Mary Poppins.
Fun Nerdfighter Fact: This song features Singamajigs and is about Napoleon.
Black Rose
Eliza RickmanEliza Rickman graced the Somerville Armory last Saturday with Boston-based Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library for a night of quirky folk pop. The California-based singer/songwriter released her debut album, “O, You Sinners” in March after a more than successful Kickstarter campaign.
Highlighted by her mellow, rich voice which has been compared to Feist and PJ Harvey, the free-spirited Rickman mixes heavy topics with a high pitched toy piano for an intricate sound. She initially began using a toy piano when she decided to bring it to a gig instead of hauling the 85 lb keyboard that she originally used.
“Black Rose” is an upbeat toy piano-driven ballad… but it’s also an exploration of a recent breakup. Considering the independent, non-stop touring schedule (this was her 47th date in 9 weeks), it’s impressive that she’s able to keep her light and charming personality and sound.
