“Maybe books won’t survive the transition to digital devices, any more than scrolls survived the transition to movable type… what the internet portends is not the end of the paper container of the book, but rather the way paper organized our assumptions about writing altogether.”

—Clay Shirky | Is the book a crucial cultural artifact, or just an outdated container for content?

Free Ebooks

bookos.org

Hey guys! For all you avid readers out there, I found this website that provides you with free ebooks! There are over two million titles to choose from, and a good chunk of them are popular books right now (teen fiction), so if you’ve got an iPhone or an ereader, anything you can read ebooks on, this websites a great place to get them!!! I obviously cannot speak to the legality of this website, so use it at your own risk, but it’s a great place to get some great books without shelling out large amounts of money!

“I still love books. Nothing a computer can do can compare to a book. You can't really put a book on the Internet. Three companies have offered to put books by me on the Net, and I said, 'If you can make something that has a nice jacket, nice paper with that nice smell, then we'll talk.' All the computer can give you is a manuscript. People don't want to read manuscripts. They want to read books. Books smell good. They look good. You can press it to your bosom. You can carry it in your pocket.”

—Ray Bradbury

Black Love

“I think it’s pretty clear that most of us who are willing to read digitally are finding a balance between physical books and digital books. … I’m tired of it being, like, “Well it has to be one or the other, right? I can’t give up [physical] books!” But who is asking you to give up books? No one is asking you to give them up!”

—Jenn on print AND digital, instead of print VS digital (Episode 50: E-Books Revisited)

To the people who say that reading e-books isn’t actually reading because “you have to admire the texture.”

Don’t get me wrong; I like print books.  Heck, I own ~500.

But I’m also autistic.  Know what that means?  A great many of us are extremely sensitive to certain textures, which, for me, includes paper.  So when I read a print book, which I love, mind you, I have to be very careful about the texture or I will go berserk.

I read e-books so that I don’t have to be pulled out of the story and stop reading because of that texture that you love so much.

So stop and think before you yell at that person for reading an e-book.

Thank you for your time.
