On Sunday, a girl came by the booth in this beautiful ball gown. I admired the detail and the care she’d put into making it and complimented her on it before I realized what she was cosplaying. She was wearing a familiar amulet and I gasped when I pulled it all together. She was Elizabeth from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, in the dress that Barbossa makes her wear.
She and her friend thanked me immediately for recognizing her and told me that I was the first that had done so all day. I was in shock! I asked her if she’d made her dress and she said she had, and I told her it was a crime that no one else had complimented her yet. She agreed, sounding dismayed. The costume was absolutely beautiful, but the amulet around her neck was a bright gold, cheap bootleg knock-off. I went to my purse and pulled out the cursed amulet I bought from Hottopic literally years ago, when I was in high school, and had carried with me in the bottom of my purse and forgotten for years and years. “Here.” I said, “You obviously deserve this more than I do and I’d love to see it go to a fan. Your costume should be complete.”
She was stunned and said she hadn’t been able to find one and had to settle for the one she was wearing instead. “Want to trade?” she asked, and I laughed and said sure.
I hope she was recognized far more and had lots of photos taken of her. Her amulet’s now in the bottom of my purse, right where the other one had been, but now I think far more fondly of it than I had the other.
I’m just glad I could pass it on :)
