Alistair contemplates the notion that love means more than being useful to someone else

Alistair had never suspected silence could be so deafening.
The words “deafening silence” made little sense in his head, but there was no other way to describe the Deep Roads. For the first week and a half that they’d traveled in the underground labyrinth of abandoned dwarven thaigs they had met at least two waves of darkspawn each day. Their presence was, of course, always unnerving, and Alistair had been relieved at first as the buzzing at the corners of his consciousness that signified the monsters were nearby had tapered off to a barely noticeable hum.
But now it had been three days since they’d seen a darkspawn, and, according to Oghren, they were finally nearing the edge of Caridin’s Cross. The only sounds that now accompanied the group of travelers were their own breaths and footsteps. Alistair decided he heartily preferred the darkspawn. At least they were something to listen to.
