Distortion Pedals?

So I just schooled myself on distortion pedals through youtube. Honestly, I’ve never used one but I feel like it’s about that time. I want to have a real hard rock meets classic rock kind of sound and if any of you guitarists out there are reading this, give me your advice! I was looking at either the BOSS MT-2, which I’m afraid might be too metal-sounding (like thrasher-esk)

or the BOSS DS-1.. I’m open to any suggestions! I might just go to the nearest pawn shop and buy the first pedal I see and just work with it haha I’ve read a few reviews here and there.. I’m leaning towards the MT-2.. 

And what about overdrive pedals? Apparently they’re more for the classic rock sound.. I want something in between hard rock and classic rock.. So where does that land me?
