“Oh the letters have dropped off
Though they say you got them all
I finally figured out some things you’ll never know.
Take back your life and let me inside
We’ll find the door if you care to anymore.

I remember running through the wet grass
and falling a step behind
Both of us never tiring
Desperately Wanting.”

Better Than Ezra - Desperately Wanting

I’ve been on a 90s kick in my bathroom lately. I know that sounds odd, but I’ve got this old school stereo sitting on my bathroom counter (and by “old school” I mean a Bose stereo c. 2000) where I play nothing but CDs from my media shelf…while I shower and shave and whatnot.

I love how odd, yet incredibly relate-able, the lyrics are from the 90s. “Sleeping is easy / I used to lay in bed for hours” from Better Than Ezra’s “WWOZ” and “You’re naked inside your fear / You can’t take back all those years” from Goo Goo Dolls “Naked” (…easily their best album, A Boy Named Goo). “And music is my aeroplane” from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Aeroplane” and “‘Cause I have found / All that shimmers in this world is sure to fade / Away again” from Fuel’s “Shimmer”.

And what about probably the best sophomore effort ever by a group? Our Lady Peace’s Clumsy was incredible. “Superman’s Dead”? Man that album rocked…the opening lyrics: “Do you worry that you’re not liked / How long till you break / You’re happy cause you smile / But how much can you fake?” Seriously? The 90s were great. Those of you born during the 90s and not really familiar with the music? Go get your library card’s equivalent for music and check out how great the post-grunge movement was. I promise, it’s worth it.

Desperately Wanting

Better than Ezra

Baby burst in the world
Never given a chance
Then they ask “what went wrong?”
When you never had it right…
I finally figured out some things you’ll never know
Take back your life and let me inside
We’ll find the door if you care to anymore

I remember running through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tiring
Desperately wanting

The next few days will be spent converting Dr. Advisor’s book manuscript from APA style to Chicago. I’m not even going to ask the question of why not just write in Chicago style from the project’s inception. Nope, can’t even think it… Therefore, I’m going to my happy place of 90’s alt rock. Reminds me of a much simpler time of the bliss that was adolescent innocence/ignorance.

I used to adore this song. I still do.

Desperately Wanting by Better than Ezra

I remember running through the wet grass

falling a step behind

both of us never tiring

desperately wanting

I want to read some golden-era J2

from before they were married, while they were still living together.

I want to think of them in their separate rooms, staring at their ceilings, imagining what might happen if they left their beds, crept through the house and found each other in the dark.

DESPERATELY WANTING by Better than Ezra

Past the road to your house
Will you never called home?
Where they turned out the lights
Though they say you’ll never know

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
Desperately wantin’

When they pumped out your guts
Filled you full of those pills
You were never quite right
Deserving all the chills

They say the worst is over
Kick it over again
Then they ask what went wrong
When they turn you on again
Yeah, they turn you on again

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
Desperately wantin’

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
Desperately wantin’

Kick them right in the face
Make them wish they weren’t born
And if they bring up your name
Well, say you won the war

Baby, burst in the world
Never given a chance
Then they ask what went wrong
When you never had it right
Though you never had it right

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
Desperately wantin’

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
Desperately wantin’

Oh oh, the letters have dropped off
Though they say you got them all
I finally figured out
Some things you’ll never know, no

Take back your life
Let me inside
We’ll find the door
If you care, if you care to anymore

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
Desperately wantin’

I remember runnin’
Through the wet grass
Falling a step behind
Both of us never tirin’
