Counter-Strike is a game which requires no introduction… Wait that one isn’t gonna work here. The truth is, it’s loosing its general popularity to first person shooters many CS players could master with their eyes closed. Counter-Strike is a game which requires skill, and most just fail to put forth the effort needed to succeed. It is a shame, because most consider it to be the best first-person shooter to date! Most initial impressions of them game are very intimidated whimperings, I know mine was. But over the time I’ve been playing, I have grown to know and love the game. The three things you need to be a good Counter-Strike player are: familiarity, consistency, and obsession. Over your time playing the game, you must develop these traits in your game. Without these three things, you will not improve.
obsessionOut of all these traits, nothing will drive you farther than your desire to learn more about the game. Even though I have been playing on and off for 4 years, I have only recently really become obsessed with the game. I believe that I could really become good at the game. You need to find this same belief with everything you do well, and this is no exception. You need to live and breath CS.
familiarityI’ve always have trouble with nerves while playing any type of first person shooter, and the one thing I can say is: everybody dies. Unless you are God (or cheating), your career will encompass every stretch of the CS universe, and that includes dying, ALOT. So you don’t have to be nervous about it. Now I’m not saying just run out and die, but don’t let your nerves get in the way of your instincts and critical thinking. The best thing you can do to get over this is deathmatch for 45 min each day.
consistencyConsistsency is something you must develop over time, and it mostly stems from your familiarity with maps and common practices, and how to exploit them consistently. With experience comes consistency, and unfortunately I cannot teach experience. You must learn for yourself why you don’t peek AWPers, or spray from far range. I will tell you of course, but it’s your choice to put it in action.
