home sweet home
As I shared in my previous post, I’m a lover of Mid-Century modern designs, for those who may not be familiar with it Mid-Century modern is an architectural, interior and product design form that generally describes mid-20th century developments in modern design, architecture, and urban development from roughly 1933 to 1965.
My humble home was built in the early 1960’s and has remained largely untouched since, a lick of paint here, restoring the wooden floors here, the only major renovations were the kitchen and bathrooms to better suit todays modern living.
As such I’ve felt called to curate it accordingly, buying old furniture from the 50’s and ‘60’s, largely Scandinavian in theme, though the colour choice and bold oversized items are reminiscent of much of the atomic era American homes.
I’ve thrifted much of it through visiting markets, Gumtree and the like, with some really special pieces like the Poul Cadovius ‘Royal System’ wall unit, which we will be using to ‘curate this space’.
Here are a few pics of the living room in detail, to best understand both the space and myself a visual walk through is needed.
In future posts I’ll share a bit more in detail about some of my favourite items.
Just listed-Iconic Danish Teak Ice Bucket
Icon: Congo Teak Ice bucket by Jens H. Quistgaard
“Inspired by the hull of a viking ship, this large staved teak ice bucket, incongruously calledCongo is lined in orange plastic.
Danish-born Jens H. Quistgaad was one of Scandinavia’s leading designers with a vast product range that included furniture, kitchen equipment, tableware and more. He is most closely associated with Dansk International Designs, a company which he co-founded with American entrepreneur Ted Nierenberg. Their partnership lasted for 30 years, Quistgaardbeing responsible for the majority of designs produced. He worked in a variety of materials including iron, steel, ceramic and wood. It is wood, and in particular teak, which most often springs to mind when Jens Quistgaard is mentioned.”

Design Treasure of the Month: Hans Olsen Teak Danish Modern Table from 1953
A wonderful round mid century dining table by designer by Hans Olsen for Frem Roujle. Table is signed. From Burmese Teak. Hard to find compact size, measuring 42” diameter. There is a butterfly leaf stored inside the table. It easily folds out as needed and transforms the length of the table to 61”. Amazing condition, with just a few tiny nicks on the legs to show it really is old. Beautiful graining and the wrap around molded edge. Below is a wide, richly grained apron by the legs and four round legs. Several styles of mid century dining chairs could co-ordinate with the table. These tables sell at auction for much more.
About Hans Olsen: Although Olsen was a student of Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy’s Furniture School from 1941 to 1943, he belongs to a group of Danish furniture designers who chose to experiment with both form and materials. In 1953, he set up his own studio where he designed and produced a series of exciting pieces in a distinctive style, exhibiting them at the annual fairs of the Cabinetmakers Guild in Copenhagen. This table was one of his most notable designs. He designed a range of items for furniture manufacturers including Bramin Møbler, Juul Kristensen, C.S. Møbler and Frem Røjle.
