Rome, the Danger Mouse/Daniele Luppi spaghetti western inspired concept album, was released today. It is essentially a “soundtrack without a movie”, with dreamy instrumental tracks featuring vocals by Jack White and Norah Jones. If you haven’t already, make sure to also check out “Two Against One”, one of the singles featuring Jack White, here. The album can be purchased via Amazon and iTunes.

Ok, let’s get one thing out of the way first. Who in their right mind conceives a spaghetti-western influenced album created in tandem with an Italian composer while simultaneously featuring prominent other musicians in vocals roles? Well, Danger Mouse is doing exactly that on his upcoming album with Daniele Luppi, Rome. At first I was understandably suspect of the project, as the idea itself is rather hard to condense down into song format instead of a long, movie-spanning score. But from listening to “Two Against One”, I am very excited to see how this full project turns out.
The thing about this song that you have to immediately appreciate is the choice of Jack Black as the vocalist. His conviction and dedication to the art of minimalism in music mixes perfectly with the musical background. With a meandering guitar line that makes you feel something is a brewin’ in an old western town and his haunting vocals, the song as a whole is a suprisingly strong effort.
Also released from the album was a track done with Norah Jones, “Black”, which can be listened to at the Pitchfork website.
