I’d just like to rage about something. It is in relation to this article (not the article itself, but what it’s reporting about).
I can’t believe that the Western Australian government is out to kill this shark and is considering culling more. That is so infuriating! The sharks are not the problem, the humans are! Every time anyone steps into the ocean, they voluntarily assume the risk that something negative could happen - whether it be to do with sharks or any other aspect of nature! All that is going to be achieved by killing this shark is that the public perception of sharks as evil monsters is going to be further distorted. I’ve always loved sharks and one of the main reasons I’d ever consider going to Western Australia is to actually cage dive with the Great Whites! They should embrace the fact that they have these beautiful animals living off their shores, instead of trying to eradicate them! How many times do we have to destroy species of animals before we realise that we’re just senselessly ruining our planet?!
Just please leave these beautiful animals alone!
Stop the Badger Cull

vaccinate, not cull. culling a protected species to save another (incidentally just for slaughter later to fill supermarket aisles) is NOT the answer.

From my statistics lecturer: There are on average between 1 and 1.4 fatal shark attacks every year in Australia (depending on region).
We have had 3 fatal shark attacks in WA this year.
In Australia, there are on average 87 fatalities from drowning in the ocean per year.
Getting killed by a shark fucking sucks. And i feel very sorry for family and friends who have lost loved ones in shark attacks, but anyone who thinks killing a shark will fix the problem must also desire to either ban swimming or drain the whole ocean (how else will we stop the immensely larger proportion of drownings???). And that’s retarded.
Our premier has stated “It will remain the case in the future that in the event that a great white is a threat to human life and I’m advised of it, then I will give authority to the fisheries department to seek to catch that shark and to destroy it”. He has also said that his government will consider shark culls in the future.
Colin Barnett you are a disgusting pig.
I need to get involved in local politics. I need to join groups. AGHHHHG NEED TO DO SOMETHING!! i want this stupid man out of power.
Two node.js libraries: node-mysql-simple and node-phpass
As previously promised, here are the first two libraries Cull has released to the public.
node-mysql-simpleThis library sits on top of the excellent MySQL driver by Felix Geisendörfer and generic-pool by James Cooper, providing easy to use methods for inserting and retrieving data from MySQL. The tedious details of managing a pool of database connections and registering the correct event listeners for different queries is hidden behind a one-method-per-query API that should make high performance MySQL access as easy to code as our other favorite data backend, Redis.
node-phpassBefore you ask, it’s “p-h-pass”. This is a port of the PHP password hashing framework to node. phpass is a common PHP library used for password hashing, used in several major PHP frameworks including the CodeIgniter authentication plugin we were using in our initial prototype of Cull. Password hashing is one of those areas where it rarely makes sense to roll your own, and we also wanted to preserve access to our beta user’s accounts without forcing everyone to reset their password. The primary goal of node-phpass is full compatibility with the original PHP library, allowing a node app to authenticate users and hash new passwords in a system with a PHP backend, or to provide strong password hashing in a full node.js environment. The library is powered by a JavaScript implementation of BCrypt, making node-phpass completely cross-platform.
Prevent the culling of WA's sharks!
“We the undersigned are calling for you to prevent the culling of WA’s sharks and instead further the use of non-lethal beach protection measures such as spotter planes and beach patrols.
This comes after recent reports in the WA media have suggested that certain politicians and members of the public are calling for a shark cull in response to the recent shark attack fatalities. We are asking you to review the facts and the reality of shark attacks to make the right decision and realize that a shark cull would be disastrous not only to Australia’s marine environment but also Australia’s reputation as a world leader in marine conservation.”
I love how people in England are angry at foxes for roaming city streets, and want to cull them. Don’t you know that WE are the ones destroying their habitat by building our own cityscape? This land was all grassy woods and what not before we built cities, so the fox is in it’s natural habitat, be it London or other cities, we just made it so they have no choice but to be street city foxes.
Animals Shot Dead By Zoo Staff.

Zoo claims this baboon was “humanely put down.”
A popular British zoo/safari park is being praised for its “excellence in animal husbandry and welfare” by the UK government even after a whistle blower exposed grisly scenes of murdered animals thrown near trash cans. The park admits shooting and “humanely putting down” scores of animals that either showed signs of aggression or were “excessive” in stock.
The horrific images from Knowsley Safari Park in the UK are more proof that zoos and safari parks are not safe homes for wild animals. Animals that procreate beyond a controllable size are shot and killed and thrown away like so much trash.

The whistle blower claimed that untrained staff were asked to shoot animals dead and sometimes more than 3 shots were required to finish an animal off.
The park has been ordered to create a better storage facility for the corpses but MY major concern is that there are so many corpses to begin with.
Tweet the zoo your reaction here. Attach the article.
