30 Days of Marvel--#2 Favorite Villain--Lorelei
I had to think about this for a bit. I don’t know why. There’s not one outstanding villain compared to another for me. Loki is probably my favorite, but I’m sure Tumblr has heard enough about him. So I thought I’d change it up. Then there is Red Skull who I find absolutely fascinating. In addition, the first comic I ever read was an issue that delved into his back story. A part of me wants to use this as an excuse to write about Winter Soldier who technically was a villain. He also blew up Philadelphia. I could have died! But that won’t work for me. Instead, I decided to write about a favorite villain of mine who is “lesser” known.

Therefore, I came to conclusion that Lorelei would serve as my favorite villain. It was a tough choice between her and Amora. I love Amora a little bit more than her, but there’s not a whole lot of Lorelei to really build off of as a favorite character. Not to mention, I’m glad Lorelei isn’t just another blonde character.
Lorelei is Amora’s younger sister and only interested in amorous arts. A lot like Amora, Lorelei is also sent to Midgard by Loki to tempt Thor during Walt Simonson’s run. (Simonson being her creator.) She tricks Thor into loving her as Melodi. He is bound to Midgard without Donald Blake.

Her entrance soon starts one of my all time favorite plot arcs for The Mighty Thor. The Casket of Ancient Winters. I love the fact that Lorelei takes this role of the damsel in distress while she is a lot stronger physically and emotionally than she may originally appear. Not to mention, as much as she pretends to love Thor her growing relationship with Loki becomes more and more fascinating. There are moments where it is hard to tell if one really does love the other. I believe that Lorelei’s love for Loki says a lot about Loki as a character in the way he treats her.
Even though Lorelei may constantly stand against Thor for Loki, she ends up sacrificing herself in a battle with Seth. While she may have more of a “heroic” death there is almost nothing “heroic” about her and her reasoning. She is selfish and allows that to drive all of her actions, which is fascinating. I wish I could dig into her mind a little more to better understand all the “whys” to her selfish choices. A lot like her older sister, Amora, I feel like Lorelei is lost. There is this identity struggle that cannot out weigh this thirst she has for love and power.
