My little sister and I were talking....

about the X Men, and I said something about how there was a holocaust but with mutants in one of the character’s timelines.

She looked right at me and said, “What’s that?”

“What’s what?”

“A ‘holocaust’ ?”

So, we had a conversation in which she told me that she had never heard of the Holocaust.  I tried to explain it to her, but she had no idea about anything I was saying.  I got questions like “what are Jews?” and “what does “discrimination” mean?” I tried to answer her questions, and I think I gave her a basic understanding of the topic. But I’m not as knowledgeable as a teacher would be, so I could only tell her that she HAS to be learning about it in school sometime in the future.

The kicker is that she’s in middle school.  It makes me scared to think that she has been in school for this long, and not once has anyone mentioned the Holocaust or World War II.  I remember learning about the Holocaust in some form in most of my History or English classes since third grade.
