droidmike.comIt remains to be seen if they’ll be the big game-changer in education that Google hopes they will be, but the company is making some progress at getting its Chromebooks into schools. The latest push is a deal with three US school districts, which will see some 27,000 Chromebooks land in the hand of students in Iowa, Illinois and South Carolina. As CNET reports, South Carolina’s Richland School District Two is making by far the biggest investment of the lot, ordering 19,000 Chromebooks that will be used as part of a three-year program for students in the third through…

Today at the Google I/O conference, it was all about the Chromebook

At day 2 of the Google I/O conference today, the day was pretty much all about the Google Chrome netbook, or “Chromebook”, since “netbook” as a word is so 2010. After a number of delays, it looks like that the first Chromebooks will be rolling out in mid June, but what does this brave new OS world have in store?

“Windows 8 itself is still not successful. The whole market didn’t come back to growth after the Windows 8 launch, that’s a simple way to judge if it is successful or not.”
—Acer President Jim Wong, talking to Tim Culpan and Debra Mao of BloombergBusinessweek.
Meanwhile, he sounds fairly bullish on Chrome OS, which seems to be the first time anyone has sounded bullish on Chrome OS since its launch. Perhaps the squeeze is finally on.
Currently playing with Chromium OS Lime
The developer, Hexxeh, was initially helpful, but then became tight-lipped when I mentioned dual-booting. He wouldn’t even answer a simple question. I just don’t want it to be my Primary OS, especially for school.
Pricks aside, I’m currently using my secondary Netbook (which happens to be signed by Steve Martin) to see if I can install Linux after a Chromium Lime installation so I can dual-boot.
I should have known he wouldn’t support dual booting, he’s a Mac user.
Google unleashes Chome OS based hardware from Samsung and Acer
In partnership with Samsung and Acer, Google unleashed a few notebooks (aka Chromebooks) upon the world today at Google I/O that run their web-based desktop operating system, Chrome OS. In addition to these laptops, they are working with Samsung to develop mini-desktop Chomeboxes, similar to thin clients, that are aimed at enterprise organizations.

I think Samsung will be the real winner here with their Chromebook. Their simple and sleek design is more in-line with Google’s original Chromebook, the Cr-48 and boasts 8.5 hours of battery life to Acer’s 6 hours and a 12.1” screen as opposed to Acer’s 11.6” screen.
Acer does have an advantage over the Samsung Chromebook in terms of ports and weight. Acer’s design includes an HDMI port (Samsung features Mini-VGA) and weighs just under 3lbs (Samsung weighs in at 3.26lbs).
Personally, I’m still more fond of the Cr-48’s design and that was my main reason for giving Samsung the kudos for their design. The design of the Acer Chromebook is reminiscent of a IBM Thinkpad with the wedge taper, rubber monitor bezel pads and useless LED’s marring the front. It’s too corporate and not as polished looking.
The real test of these notebooks will be Google’s ability to market it’s operating system as a useful alternative to Windows and MacOS.
