A year and a half or so back, I highlighted a young artist by the name of Shanz covering “Kids” by MGMT, and now we’ve got something more official from the talented world traveler - as well as a name change (S H A A N Z). Here we’ve got “Wicked Game”, a sci-fi-folk twist on the Chris Isaak classic which is just one of the six gorgeous covers on her new Bandcamp EP, “Brotha Covah” (also available is her new full length of originals - on the same page). What’s really exciting here is that S H A A N Z works within the lo-fi, bedroom pop realm, but plays with noise and ambient soundscapes in a way similar to Grouper, Xiu Xiu, or Motion Sickness of Time Travel. Definitely someone worth following at this early stage of her career.
