Adonis is removing choices for kids

So Adonis is meddling in education affairs again is he? The last time I was aware of this unelected Labour peer was when he created Academies as part of his role within the Department of Education. That role was secured after he donated a big cash gift to the Labour party which very coincidentally timed precisely with his elevation to peer of the realm.

From his seat in the House of Lords Adonis could meddle with education, and latterly transport, as he wished. Luckily for us, as an ex FT journalist, Adonis has no experience whatsoever to support his ideologies.

So as we wait for the damage caused by the ticking time bomb of his academies proposal to come to fruition, Adonis has thrown another bold idea into the mix.

Apparently he would like a vocational alternative to the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), which is comprised of English, Maths, Science and some other subjects considered core and academic by Gove. This is to provide opportunities for students who would rather study Art, ICT or PE to gain an equivalent qualification.

I have no issue with this in principle but I would rather that students weren’t hindered by the EBacc but were instead allowed to study their own choice of subjects from a narrow selection. English and Maths should be compulsory and perhaps Science as well, but a core set of knowledge from the science syllabus to do with human biology, medicine and chemistry with real world applications not stuff that isn’t applicable to everyday life.

Having seen the great mistake that is the BTEC qualification, which holds no academic rigour and is essentially coursework prescriptively directed by the teacher, I don’t see how encouraging another branch off from the norm is useful.

The skills that students need to progress in any industry, from what I’ve experienced in business and schools, is a good level of English and Maths. Anything else is only necessary for specialised industries or job roles. So therefore why not only regiment these vital skills and then let students choose their own points of interest around these. With just these basic subjects students then leave themselves open to a wide array of career options and life choices.

I think there is a real danger in overcomplicating the syllabus, in Gove’s case to try and bring back a 1950s ideal of teaching and in Adonis’, a modernised viewpoint of the future. As a soon to be full time teacher all I want is a simple system which provides students with the flexibility to succeed, follow their interests and leave school with the greatest number of options available to them.

Of course, we need to differentiate between the brightest, to determine which students will go on to further academic education and those better suited for vocational routes but this should be left as late as possible. We don’t want to be directing 14 year old kids into the careers they’ll be engaged in for the next 50 years. There are better methods.

Let’s do away with this over structured framework and let kids succeed with the subjects that interest them the most.

RATM: Beautiful World (Music Video)

This is a music video I made during my second year of college. Directed, acted and edited by me. My girlfriend at the time operated the camera. There’s a few mistakes in here but I like this video.

For the next few weeks my life is going to revolve around business work. How f*cking fun?.. but hey, gotta do what i gotta do!

leggo

  • Every A Level student: lol people who do BTECs are dumb.
  • Every A Level student at the end of the year: I wish I did a BTEC.

If you know Fick's Law, you know everything about life and breathing.

Fick’s Law (don’t call it fuck’s law, not even for a joke, and I know this from experience) is how you can trick anybody into thinking you know the world about living organisms. You can apply it to anything to do with practically anything that includes oxygen, which is kind of a lot, seeing as we only need to, you know, breathe it.

Fick’s law is just one fact. It’s easy as hell to learn, easy as hell to apply, you can answer so many different questions with it, Fick’s Law will give you a higher grade and completely change your life for the better. LEGIT.

Fick’s Law is:

Rate of Diffusion = Surface Area x Concentration Gradient / Membrane Thickness.

Diffusion is the movement of particles to a smaller concentration. The rate of diffusion is how quickly those particles move. Diffusion needs no energy to happen.

The Law translates as, as simply put as possible:

  • Bigger surface area = SHIT MOVES FASTER.
  • Moving from a high concentration to one a lot lower = SHIT MOVES FASTER.
  • The cells are thinner = SHIT. MOVES. FASTER.

And that is literally it. Now you know about diffusion and how net movement is made faster, and you all scroll away from this post better people. It’s just a little physics, but it can answer most exams for you. And it’s easy as piss.

Listen in.

The divide between me and my class? Tenfold. I’ve never actually wrote about them on here, so here’s a catch up. I decided to take the easy way to Uni by doing a Btec.. sport. Im in my last year of sixth form. Sport brings along Chavs.

Im quite blunt when it comes to me not liking somebody (complete opposite if attracted) so I have let it slip to them numerous times that I do not like them.

An example?… Lucy why do you always sit on the other side of the classroom to everyone else? Because I don’t like you.

It’s now got to the point where I do not have any contact with any of them, that’s 15 lessons a week of me, in silence… it’s brilliant.

EPIC WINNING

Just found out i got a DDD (triple distinction) for my btec course in musical theatre!  NOT ONLY THAT, but i also managed to get the highest scores you could possibly get on the course, and the highest out of the entire academic year!  HELL YEAAHHH!!

AND

I got to Kavos TONIGHT!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

ITS SUMMER BABY!

Play

Well i wasted 4 hours today!!

Went to enroll at sixth form, but when i got there i found out they cancelled my course and so i chose another, but found out it was an A-Level and u need 3 more subjects to go with it.

So i picked it and then went to look for the other ones i would like to take but found out the ones i liked i was not allowed to do!! And my mum said don’t do anything u wouldn’t want to take, so now i am looking for a new college or start work!!

Wasted my time!! But on the plus side i got chips afterwards to calm me down and had a nice walk home with my mate :D

School Opinions!

I actually enjoy going to school, I will be honest. I might act like I hate it but I love it. There are many reasons why and it depends on the subjects and teachers, but overall it IS enjoyable.

  • First is the stationary shopping, I freaking love this! I love looking at cutesy folders and notebooks and cool pens. Having fresh equipment for a new year of school is amazing. I get really excited when I use them for the first time too!
  • Second is meeting new people. I’m usually someone who waits for people to come up to me because I live in fear of the thought of being annoying. But once you meet new people and you slowly become friends, School is worth going to, especially if you have a bad home life like me.
  • Third, is the fun subjects. I’m doing a 2 year BTEC Forensics couse starting in September at a new college. I am REALLY excited to start this course because it’s mainly coursework/essay writing. I LOVE THIS. I am super good at essay writing, During GCSE’s my essays have all been A*/A grade and I managed to get an A* in Science coursework all the while tutoring and helping my lab partner to get 2 B’s after being a D grade student for years.
  • Fourth is an escape from home. Enough said.

BUSINESS COURSEWORK.
