Why was homework invented?

Think about it. We don’t really need it. I’m sure nobody does it anyways. I’m sure the gnomes just do it for people in exchange for gifts and gnome luxuries. Plus, I really don’t understand this. Math is hard… what does TAN mean? Is that like a New Jersey thing? Maybe if I ask Lord Tubbington for Snookie’s number, then maybe I can figure it out… or I can just bribe the gnomes into doing my homework for me…?
