“I can’t believe you managed to convinced me to go to the dance anyway, Alexis.” I muttered as my best friend, her boyfriend, and I walked into a beautiful ballroom for our school’s dance.
I never wanted to go. It would mean being at a dance without Harry—without my best friend, my boyfriend, my life. He had told me last week that One Direction was scheduled for an interview tonight, and Alexis had to nearly tape me up and throw me in her trunk to get me to come to the dance.
“Come on, Stephanie. Don’t be like that. We’ll have a lot of fun! This is our last dance ever. Just because Harry’s not here does not mean you can’t have a good time.” At the sad face I must have made, Alexis clapped her hands over her mouth. “I didn’t mean to say the H-word, Steph. Promise.”
I rolled my eyes and sucked up the fact that Harry wasn’t going to be slow-dancing with me or smiling down at me, revealing those adorable dimples. No, he wasn’t even going to be looking at me with those attractive green eyes that always seemed to stare right into my core.
“Earth to Stephanie! Come on, let’s go dance!” Alexis chirped, poking me in the ribs for good measure before being escorted by her boyfriend to the dance floor.
Boy, this was going to be one. Awful. Night. Ugh.
Eyeing the crowd of people dancing the night away with their dates, I wanted to just go hide in a bathroom stall and cry. It sucked having a boyfriend in a band. He tried to fit in time for me, but it never lasted long before he had to go run back to his boys for this and that.
I made my way over to where Alexis was dancing with her boyfriend and awkwardly tried to dance with them, feeling like the worst kind third wheel out there. Alexis, bless her, frowned at me and turned away from her boyfriend to dance with me a bit, fooling around and joking to try and coax a laugh out of me. It worked, for a bit anyway.
But then the first slow dance came up and my heart sank. The boys wrapped their arms around their dates’ waists and everyone seemed to have a partner but me. As I walked away from the crowd, I glanced over my shoulder at Alexis, who mouth ‘sorry’ from the outskirts of the group.
Taking a seat at a table, I watched with growing sadness at all of the happy couples, wishing desperately that Harry could have been here for me.
“Isn’t she lovely?”
I froze when someone’s familiar angelic voice over-powered the slow song. Everyone stopped and looked over at the entrance of the ballroom, murmuring about who had sang.
I didn’t even have to follow their eyes to know that Harry had somehow materialized at the front doors. Tears stung my eyes as I looked over, seeing my boyfriend standing in the door way with a microphone up to his lips. “Isn’t she wonderful?”
He was staring right at me with those beautiful eyes of his, and I ignored the crowd gasping as they realized who he was singing to. When he walked slowly over, looking stunning in a black suit and a red tie and with his beautiful curls seeming to look even more perfect than before, I stood up, biting my lip to keep from making an obnoxious sobbing noise.
“Isn’t she precious? All the more beautiful…” I smiled through my tears when Harry changed the words of the song he used to sing to me before I’d sleep. As Harry sang each line in that stunning voice of his, he got closer and closer. This was my favorite boy in the entire world singing my favorite song to me. My heart was racing, my tears were beyond stopping point… “I never thought, through love we’d be… living our lifes so happy…”
Harry took a few more steps. His face was inches from mine and he dropped the mic down so that it was just his dazzling voice singing to me, “But isn’t she lovely, made from love?”
The crowd burst into applause, hooting and hollering and wolf-whistling like we had just won a hockey game. Their voices drowned out at the feeling of Harry’s strong, familiar arms wrapping around my waist. I looked up at him, too ecstatic for words. My voice was gone—drowned by my joyful tears.
Harry’s dazzling smile sent shivers down my spine and melted in his arms, pressing my head against his chest and wishing I could never leave his arms. “I’m so glad you’re here, Harry.” I managed to whimper, surprising myself.
His chest shook with his smooth laughter. “So am I, Steph.” We held each other for a few more moments before the DJ’s recovered from their shock and resumed the slow song. Untangling me from his arms, Harry touched his lips against mine. “May I have this dance?” He whispered against my lips, pulling me over to the dance floor.
I think it was safe to say that my last dance ever had been one of the best dances ever.
