Knowing Hope is really lovely because Hope is one of those excellent humans who wants to talk about the people and the things she loves and wants to share that with you and even when she’s talking about people you don’t know, you can tell how much she cares about them and that she believes the best of them and you can tell how kindly she views the world and it just makes you want to be a person Hope knows and cares about, I guess.

YES HOPE I WOULD LOVE TO!! i’m going to publish this if that’s okay because i think it’s a commonly held thought that zoos are kind of like animal prisons and that’s very untrue, so yeah! mythbustin’!
the main purpose of a good zoo (and i’m not denying that there are not-good zoos out there) is to help animals. the mission statement of the oregon zoo is “inspire our community to create a better future for wildlife”, and that’s more or less what you’ll find at any zoo: the goal is not to showcase animals (although there’s no denying that entertainment is a part of it), but to make people care about animals. every single zoo has a conservation/education department which hires people solely to educate and inspire the public. (when i worked at the oz we were told every day to INSPIRE!!! and at the time it seemed silly but it’s honestly the most important part of a zoo).
the people that work in zoos—the people that work with animals in particular—love animals more than anyone you’ll meet in your life. i’ve met a lot of animal keepers, and they’re some of the smartest and most interesting people i’ve ever met, and all of them work at the zoo because they love animals more than anything. these people wouldn’t work at a zoo if it was harmful to animals. and animals at the zoo don’t live a bad life—all of them live at zoos because they were born in captivity or injured in the wild; the animals you see in a zoo are unfit to live in the wild anymore. additionally, having animals in zoos helps people save animals in the wild: by studying the behaviour of captive animals, and learning about them and their habits, it becomes easier to conserve animals in natural habitats and protect the future of any species.
also, any accredited zoo (and a zoo can’t really survive unless it’s accredited) is watched over by the AZA, association of zoos and aquariums. i went on the aza website to write this, and they have so many pages on education, conservation, habitat protection, and animal welfare that it’s borderline ridiculous. they make sure that animals have good living conditions at a zoo, are mentally stimulated and taken care of. there are space guidelines (for every type of animal, there’s a certain amount of space you need in their exhibit, and the more animals you have, the more space you need. there’s math), and ethical codes. it’s a nonprofit organization (as is the oregon zoo and i assume many others), so the goal isn’t to make money off of animals: it’s literally to teach people about animals so they’ll want to save them. that’s the point of any zoo: to protect animals, both the ones that live in a zoo and the ones that don’t.
zoos are really amazing places. they’re interactive and educational and really, really fun, and if you go to a zoo looking for information about an animal, or about conservation, you’ll absolutely find it; also, the way you find it will likely be entertaining and amusing and fun because it involves real animals, which are pretty much the coolest beings ever. when people talk about how much they hate zoos, i just feel sorry that they’ve never had a good experience with such a cool place.
