“The desire to seek out the truth regardless of whether that truth is comfortable or convenient, that is what journalism's all about, isn't it? Otherwise it stops being news and simply becomes propaganda.”

—Seventh Doctor, BFA #74 “LIVE 34”
  • Mysterious Voice: [maniacal laughter] At last! I control everything! You are my pawns to do with as I please. You have no choice but to BEND TO MY WILL. Yes.... I own you... I... am your Creator. And I can be... your Destroyer!!
  • Mel: Honestly, Doctor, stop being so melodramatic!
  • Doctor: Mel, am I not permitted an occasional moment of melodrama??
  • Mel: Yes, but it's only a game of Monopoly!
  • Doctor: A game... that I am winning! [maniacal laughter] Yeees, there is no power but mine! I control Park Lane... Mayfair... the Waterworks--
  • Mel: Doctor!!
  • Doctor: I want to imagine what it feels like to be a power-crazed dictator! See into the enemy's mind...
  • Mel: And??

Prologue

Big Finish Productions

Doctor Who - An Earthly Child

Starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, Carole Ann Ford reprises her role as Susan Campbell (nee Foreman, the Doctor’s grandaughter), and Jake McGann (Paul’s son) as Alex Campbell (Susan’s son).

The Doctor returns to 22nd century Bristol to reunite with his granddaughter Susan, who is still dealing with the aftermath of The Dalek Invasion of Earth 30 years afterwards. There he discovers his rebellious great-grandson, Alex, and the drastic action Susan has taken to save a world in need of repair.
A much more satisfying reunion between the Doctor and Susan than The Five Doctors. Above is the first two minutes of the play. Available legally at Big Finish Productions and not so legally here.

Interesting Parallel

  • Eighth Doctor: Hugh, Giant robot on the Rampage, no time to waste!
  • Hugh: It's Massive!
  • Eighth Doctor: I've seen bigger!
  • . . .
  • Eleventh Doctor: I've seen bigger.
  • Clara: Really?
  • Eleventh Doctor: Are you joking? It's massive!

I'm Better

Doctor Who

“I’m Better” from the Big Finish audio “Doctor Who and the Pirates”

AKA the song where the Sixth Doctor and The Ruthless Mr. Merryweather have a pirate-off to prove who is the better pirate!

Merryweather:
I sail the ocean blue, attentive to my duty.
With Captain Red and crew, our crew’s in search of booty.
When anchor we ‘weigh, and we sail away,
And find a fine ship to pursue,
The men look to me as the man they want to be.
I’m a better sailor far than you.

Pirates:
Hurrah, hurrah, Mr. Merryweather’s best!
Hurrah, hurrah-

The Doctor:
Shall I put him to the test?

I am the Doctor from the TARDIS bold, you’ve never seen a one like me.
I’m a sailor through and through, nothing nautic I can’t do,
Though I’ve hardly ever been to sea.

Merryweather:
I wonder if you’d win if a contest we begin,
Can you climb a rig like me?

With my maritime resource I can handle any course with great efficiency.
Although I look urbane there’s still water in my veins.
Can you handle a ship like me?

Merryweather: I’m better!
The Doctor: I’m better!
Merryweather: I’m better!
The Doctor: We’ll see who’s better!

Pirates:
For he can sail a ship, you’ll see!
Then give three cheers and one more cheer,
For one of you is far the better privateer!
Then give three cheers and get a grip,
As Merryweather sails this ship!

The Doctor:
I have a most prodigious thirst, as every sailor has who’s true.
So much rum I’ll down that you’ll look like a clown.
I can take my drink, can you?

Merryweather:
I can down a pint or two if it’s distillated brew,
I can take more rum than you!

The Doctor:
My sea legs are the best; I walk further than the rest in ocean promenadery.
In the narrowest of space, I can saunter like an ace.
Can you walk the plank like me?

The Doctor: I’m better!
Merryweather: I’m better!
The Doctor: I’m better!
Merryweather: We’ll see who’s better!

Pirates:
For he can walk the plank, you’ll see!
So give three cheers and one more cheer,
For one of you is far the better privateer!
Then give three cheers you mountebank,
As Merryweather walks the plank!

(lyrics from here because hell if I can understand all of the words)

Anybody wanna do a Big Finish livestream next Sunday?

Probably something from the Five/Nyssa/Turlough/Tegan TARDIS Team. Open to suggestions though!

We could also talk about the Tumblr reading if you want

I need a support group.

And I’ll probably call it “Big Finish Productions.”

Personal Update I forgot to make yesterday (File Under: Relatively Pointless)

I pre-ordered the collector’s Edition of The Light at the End.

I can’t wait to get Eight Doctors worth of Excitement. Also, I need more Paul McGann as Eight in my life.

Am I the only one who will pay for something expensive months in advance and then feel like it’s free when it comes out, despite it still costing me more money than I should have spent on an Audio Play?

I remember when I joined Tumblr 2 years ago and there was very little movement on the Big Finish tag. It has always been a tag I check daily and have found some great blogs and made friends with some great people on this tag. It is amazing how this fandom has grown over the last 2 years from around 4 posts every 2 day to 2-4 posts every few hours. But really we owe it to Big Finish for the new and exciting products that get released now.

The Big Finish/ Classic Who fandom is one of the best fandoms on tumblr with the little to no hate. Just a friendly environment to blog about our feelings on top quality audio dramas.

Big Finish Main Range - #176: Starlight Robbery - August 2013

Sick of the same-old slaughter-appliances? In need of a killer new killing-machine? Then look no further than Garundel Galactic’s secret arms auction. Blasters, tanks, missiles and bombs – no bang too big or micro-laser too small. If you’ve got the credits, Garundel’s got the kill-sticks. (Cash buyers get preferential rates.)

In search of the key to a sinister alien technology, the Doctor, Klein and Will set their sights on an illicit intergalactic arms fair run by an old acquaintance – the slippery Urodelian crook, Garundel. But what are their chances of pulling off a particularly audacious heist from under the noses of Garundel and his alien clients, the ever-belligerent Sontarans…?

Take a look at the album cover, doesn’t it look amazing? That is seriously a poster I would hang in my room.
