(just to preface this note: i am not a zoophile and i have never had sexual interaction with an animal, but i do consider myself a zoo ally and i like to approach things like this with as much logical thinking as i can muster)
if your argument that animals can consent to sexual activity starts with the example of a “dog humping your leg” scenario im just going to roll my eyes at u cause that angle is basic as hell. the ultimate question is whether our social expectation of explicit consent should be applied to animals in the first place. i don’t think it should; i think ‘emotional distress’ or ‘physical abuse’ is what we should be concerned with. in cases where an animal initiates the sexual activity in question people tend to hop over the discussion about consent and turn it into one about abuse instead, claiming that the animal cannot ‘express’ emotional distress and therefore is being abused.
while that argument may apply to work animals like cows and horses—animals which are bred for compliance—it confuses me that people seem to believe a relatively intelligent animal like a dog can’t express fear or distrust or distress. they can. they will bite and snarl if they are aggressive or try to get away if they’re not. they will display clear signs of their emotional state in their body language which has been studied by scientists and animal lovers alike for thousands of years. if you are forcing or coercing a dog into doing something it does not feel comfortable doing, it will be self-evident and you’ll have to resort to something abusive like restraints or behavior training to get your way.
the grey area here (and something i generally have trouble with myself) is whether we should allow companion animals to be ‘taught’ to engage in sexual activity with a human, either through positive reinforcement (e.g. treats) or persistent, increased stimulation (like how you approach picking up rabbits). my general opinion is that if you have to put effort into receiving a sexual response you’re probably crossing a line, but i like to keep in mind that the same argument could apply to situations like married couples and are inherent in any sexual relationship.
the thing most fascinating to me is that i have spoken to people about cases where a casual pet relationship has turned sexual at the animal’s behest, typically as a result of the animal being ‘unfixed’ and therefore retaining its natural libido. the discussion about whether sexual stimulation and release from an animal apparently ‘requesting’ it gets really interesting when you consider that doing so is a regular part of the routine for professionals working with breeding horses. they legitimately have these waxy burritos that they use to stimulate the stallions regularly to prevent sexual buildup and unwanted behavior. is that abusive? i guess that’s up to you.
