frolic and fuck about
to make her gaze
turn to a scribble on a page by a picture
that holds her absence
but you’re daft to think she’d care
I didn’t post about it last night because I was tired, but this week’s watchabug feature was Megamind and GOD WHAT AN AMAZING MOVIE.
I will always love The Incredibles because superhero family and every character is amazing except Bob and it was the superhero movie I wanted for so long in so many ways. BUT there IS Bob’s manpain and even though I can’t help but feel affection for him, it grates and the movie never really sufficiently addresses and makes him stop that. It does it kind of halfway and then wanders off and also lol Ayn Rand.
BUT MEGAMIND THOUGH. Megamind what an amazing movie not just starring amazing characters but an overall narrative experience that is sweet and uproariously funny and is all about accountability and how Roxanne Ritchi solves all the problems and how destiny is the choices you make and how Nice Guys are fucking terrifying all while wrapped up in a million amazing superhero references.
And it’s sad that one of the best examples of fiction properly inviting the audience to empathize with the fear that women feel when men ignore their autonomy (and act entitled to their person and there’s no way to extract ourselves without inviting retribution because they think we’re not people we’re objects that they should be able to claim at will) and NOT EMPATHIZE AT ALL with the dude in question’s hurt fee-fees is an animated movie about a big-headed blue alien supervillain, but I’m thankful for it. I’m so thankful for it. And it had been WAY too long since I’d watched that movie since I’d somehow manage to forget, not intellectually but emotionally, how much I love it.
The Last Unicorn
AmericaWhen the last eagle flies
Over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars
At the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest
Though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving
At the last unicorn
When the first breath of winter
Through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north
And a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying
And would leave the world to mourn
In the distance hear the laughter
Of the last unicorn
I’m alive! I’m alive!
When the last moon is cast
Over the last star of morning
And the future has passed
Without even a last desperate warning
Then look into the sky where through
The clouds a path is torn
Look and see her, how she sparkles
It’s the last unicorn
I’m alive! I’m alive!
