Begin the Beguine

Marin Mazzie

Marin Mazzie sings Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” during the opening night of her cabaret act at 54 Below.

Focusing on the music that she grew up listening to and straying away from the tunes we’re so used to singing, Marin delivers a fresh, vibrant, naughty, heart-felt and exquisite show, pointing out her roots in music. From a hysterical and moving “Evergreen” to a heartbreaking “That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be,” laced with stories of her upbringing, including the many uses of a purple hairbrush and her move to Harlem (Ave, Rockford, Illinois), Marin turns pop music into something more.

Begin The Beguine

April Walsh

It’s a shame that everywhere you look you find all of these people getting rich and famous from talentless music with lyrics that don’t mean anything, or much less make sense, but the people with real talent are found singing on the side of the street.
