Tumblr Utility on Github

Now is probably a good time to back up your blogs. I’m not giving up, just taking precautions.

Horcrux

Horcrux lets you automatically backup your mails from any IMAP supported accounts (Gmail, Microsoft Exchange etc) with great ease.

The backups take place silently and unobtrusively in the background.

Tumblr Backup python script (GitHub)

github.com

tumblr_backup.py is a script that backs up your Tumblr blog locally.

The backup includes all images from photo and photoset posts. An index links to monthly pages, which contain all the posts from the respective month with links to single post pages. Command line options select which posts to backup and set the output format.

By default, all posts of a blog are backed up in minimally styled HTML.

Remember the Tumblr apocalypse?

It was sometime last year, I think. Maybe 2010. The site was down for like 4 days or something and everyone was all “My blog is gone! My life is over!”

I am inclined to take the stance of, “Dude. It’s just a blog. Chill.”

But for a lot of people, it’s been a place to document an incredible journey. And it would suck to lose that. So given Tumblr’s announcement that maintenance is planned, I was looking for a way to download the stuff, just in case. I had previously used a Tumblr Backup app for Mac, but it doesn’t seem to be working anymore. (Any idea of it’s still functional, Drew?) So I did some searching and I guess you can download you’re entire blog and save it using this Backup Jammy thing. Or as I’d prefer to call it, the Jammy Back(up).

Also.. can we talk about how funny it is going to be in Chicago when Tumblr is down (in the event that it lasts more than the stated “few hours”). At every Internet IRL thing I’ve been to, people are furiously refreshing their dashboards and posting stuff. We’ll actually have to interact. What is that madness about?
