Making Banners and Background Images

Introduction: I’ve been asked how I make my backgrounds and banners and if it is alright to use my current theme images (which is not okay for me by the way) a lot of times recently, so I decided to make a tutorial on it! This tutorial is not what I exactly do in all of my banners & bgs, but it covers the main idea and the basics of it.
Program Used:
Adobe Photoshop CS6 (works also with older versions)
Difficulty: Medium
What you must know before proceeding: Using Pen Tool and Textures
Note: It’s of utmost importance that you have a “motif” in mind. For this tutorial, I used “the dark and frosty feeling” to make the banner and the background. Other examples of motifs are bloody, pastel, cutesy, simple, etc. Your theme will look more uniform if you have a motif in mind.
Suggestions: Make a test blog for your theme. Install your chosen theme there first.
Comments: I did not go in depth with the banner/header because it follows almost the same exact steps as the background + banners are more flexible. (I usually just slap textures on to it ;u;) Also, I can’t remember where I downloaded the textures from, so I did not provide those here.
