Let me write too many words on an Avatar AU
This is an idea I’ve had since korra was announced. I don’t have the time or energy to research and write it so I’m just throwing it out here.
In this AU, Aang didn’t survive in the iceberg, he drowned in the ocean. The fire sages could sense his spirit move on, which is why there were still searches for Aang in the original show (i made that part up).
The avatar is reincarnated into a water bender from the swamps. The fic would happen when she is a young adult. Her power with water is master level, but she never manifested other elements.
Fire nation scouts come to her village one day looking for any other types of benders. The swamp people don’t really know about the avatar, so this would have worked. Something happens, and the new avatar manifests air. She then has to flee. She gets a brief run down on her quest to master the elements from the swamp’s version of a sage (like the plant bender in the original).
I never figured out who her earth bending teacher would be. There are still air benders, the fire nation stopped its attacks when they learned the avatar had moved on to water. They’re reduced in number and forbidden to have their temples, but they’re still around. Her teacher would be one of them.
Her fire teacher would be a fire bender living in secret in one of the colonies. The child of a fire nation native and earth kingdom native. Fire bending children are supposed to report to the main land for training and eventual conscription into the military or public service work. Rather than that, her parents hid her talent for 18 years or so, until she was found out. She meets up with the avatar somehow.
I didn’t have the world very planned out and didn’t have a conflict in mind. There you have it, though. Maybe I can get rufftoon to draw it ifi fit Zhao in somewhere :v .

the eliatrope council and their dragon siblings would share dual roles as avatars
the dragon siblings are more in tune with their spirituality and would be able to bend all four elements
while the eliatropes would stick with one in each life and would usually stick to one every life though it’s possible for them to deviate from their pattern. they’d also usually be the mediators of the world and would focus more on politics and peace than spirituality
who gets to be the next avatar depends entirely on which dofus hatches after the previous avatar dies. it’s possible for one member of the council to be the avatar far more times than any other depending on the timing of their dofus hatching

She has almost lost hope when she finds the boy frozen in the iceberg.
