Noche de Lluvia, San Salvador by Aracelis Girmay

Rain who nails the earth,
whose infinite legs
nail the earth, whose silver faces
touch my faces, I marry you. & open
all the windows of my house to hear
your million feral versions

Lincoln Center Fun Facts: Subway Art

The 66th Street Lincoln Center subway station renovation features a work of art entitled “Artemis, Acrobats, Divas and Dancers” created by New York City artist Nancy Spero.  The mosaic glass tile murals, completed in 2004 on both the northbound and southbound IRT West Side subway line, depict scenes of theater, dance and orchestra-related subjects.  For more information, check out this PBS slideshow about her work.

Although Lincoln Center was on the panel of consultants that approved the final design, the art project was slated as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) capital program. The MTA’s “Arts for Transit” project administers visual and performing arts programs in the New York City subway and rail stations.  Its mission is to commission artists to create site-specific permanent artwork as part of its capital program to rehabilitate stations. To see more permanent artwork created for other New York City subway stations, log on to mta.info/mta/aft or www.nycsubway.org and select “Subway Art Guide.”
