The divide between OEL Manga and Artist's Alley
My friend/colleague Deb Aoki has been publishing a fantastic series of articles about the state of OEL Manga/manga-inspired comics over here on her About.com page. If you are an artist and you haven’t read Deb’s work yet, do yourself a favor and go read it. Go now.
Since I’ve written about artists in the community and can usually be found in the alley at conventions, I wanted to chime in on this topic because I think there are a few assumptions about the relationship between the OEL Manga scene and the Artist’s Alley scene that are a little… off (I’m also hoping that some of the pro artists I know will chime in on the topic as well). I’ll be touching upon some of the points made by Deb and other artists she’s referenced too. Here goes:
200 Follower Giveaway!
Goodness, already? It feels like we just finished our 100 follower giveaway, but now there are 200 of you wonderful, awesome artists following this blog - hooray!
To celebrate, we’re doing another giveaway. Like last time, to enter you need to send an ask or fanmail starting with ***ENTRY***. After that, you need to write a short (one or two sentences) statement about something you’ve learned by doing Artist’s Alleys that you think is important! (If you haven’t done one yet, you can write something you’ve learned by getting ready to do so!) Both the header and statement are necessary or the entry will not be counted. Please keep in mind that this statement will be published on this blog if you win! After that, you’re done and entered! Unlike last time, as bonus, you can get an extra entry by reblogging this post once. You need to have already entered the normal way for this to count!
Now, onto the prizes - I’d said that we’d be giving away five itty bitty easels, but that has changed a little…

Instead we’re giving away six itty bitty easels - three natural and three black! There will be six winners to this giveaway, one easel each, and those who get back to me first after the winners are announced will get to pick their colour.
This giveaway will run for one week, and end at 11:59 PM Pacific time on Thursday May 9th, 2013. Winners will be chosen at random from amongst the entries at that point. Good luck everyone, and thanks for following!
question for anyone who's has been/is going to be part of any artist alley at a con
i have a very important question, regarding prints!
tracy and i are trying to figure out how many prints we should have. we’re both beginners, we’ve never had an artist’s alley table before, and we’re really bad at guesstimating how much we’re going to need.
what’s a pretty good set amount of prints to get when starting out? we don’t want to be sold out on the first/second day, but we also don’t want a crapton left over (tracy has more freedom with this one, since she’s selling at another convention in july. i won’t be, though!)
if anyone could help out that would be amazing! i know some artists i follow are selling prints at cons and know about this stuff :)
thanks in advance <3<3<3<3

I think Artist’s Alley may be my only hope for Uchuu Kyoudai/Space Brothers at Anime North stuff since in actuality there’s so little actual merch besides the Japanese manga volumes (despite being a new show and having like 58 episodes so far. Lame marketing D’:)
So like
if anyone has prints of those goofy Namba brothers or like literally anyone else from the show,
you have a guaranteed sale and I’ll love you forever. ;A;
