You've only read 40 books since January last year? You're a bookworm?
Wow, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that there are now requirements to be considered a bookworm. I’ll just take down my blog and stop calling myself a bookworm and tell everyone that I’ve only read 40 books in the past year, so I’m not worthy of the title.
Seriously though, I find this to be very rude.
A bookworm is someone who genuinely appreciates books and likes to read. What more would would require? I don’t think it is fair to look down on someone just because they read less books than you or aren’t what you would “expect” of a bookworm.
As much as I wish this was the case, I can’t sit around reading all day. I have school, I have a job, I have an internship coming up, I have friends. And while I hate to admit it, I can be a bit of a slow reader when I don’t have four or five hours to sit down and do nothing but read. I read Deathly Hallows in a day, but that was because I was in high school and it was summer. I don’t have that luxury anymore, especially since my summer break now is three weeks and not three months because i’m graduating in three years instead of four.
I’m not sorry for my sassy answer, even if I get people telling me it was rude. I may be able to handle this little criticism considering I spent my whole life dealing with much more personal hits and I’be gained a thick skin, but there are so many others who would not be able to deal with this as easily and it could hurt them and I hate that. It is things like this that turn people off from joining fandoms and communities, such as the book loving community, and that makes me sad. I like introducing people to things I enjoy, but why would they want to stay if they’re being judged?
It’s also a pet peeve of mine when people start geting snobby, for lack of a better word, about being a ‘bookworm’ or a ‘potterhead.’ We should enjoy books together and talk about books together, not create some weird hierarchy just because someone read 100 books since January and I’ve “only” read 40.
